  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We just finished testing an array of storage options and I wanted to share some of the results here. All tests were performed on a 2012 Mac Pro 5,1. We have a HighPoint USB 3.0 Quad card installed along with a 2 port eSATA card, a Radeon 7970 GHz Edition, RED Rocket, and we have 4x internal Corsair 480 GB Force GT Series SATA III 6 Gb/s plus one more for external use via docks (REDMAG 2.5"). The external USB 3.0 drives are LaCie Porsche 3 TB's.

All speeds shown are write first, read second, MB/s. The test file was a 5.1 GB R3D.

- 10/100/1000 Ethernet (via Synology NAS) 20.5/20.6
- USB 3.0 (via LaCie Porsche 3TB and HighPoint controller) 112.3 / 118.2
- eSATA External (via 1x Corsair 480GB SSD REDMAG 2.5" dock) 189.6 / 191.7
- SATA III (via 1x Corsair 480GB SSD internal bay) 223.4 / 268.1
- SATA III (via 2x Corsair 480GB SSD as RAID 0 stripe array) 422.7 / 494.9

I hope this is useful to some folks. We're going to focus on an eSATA external RAID 0 stripe array for our working external drives. The internal RAID 0 stripe will be for 'working files'. Archives will be on the Synology NAS (32 TB).

Rob,

Thanks for posting this. This part is of particular interest. Adding another SSD and putting them in a RAID 0 "almost" doubles speed.

Are the Corsair SSDs 6G?

Does the Mac Pro not have the ability to take advantage of 6G drives in the internal bays?

- SATA III (via 1x Corsair 480GB SSD internal bay) 223.4 / 268.1
- SATA III (via 2x Corsair 480GB SSD as RAID 0 stripe array) 422.7 / 494.9

Thanks for keeping up on this thread Rob. So your only able to get 3G performance on your SSDs inside your Pro Tower? Which is roughly 250 MB/S, 450 MB/S in RAID 0 with two drives.

Damn... our Mac Pro towers are getting long in the tooth. Are the optical drives also limited to SATA II? What about PCIe lanes?

SATA II is 3G and SATA III is 6G. The SSD's are 6G (down compatible to 3G).

The new 27" IMAC

The new 27" IMAC

I order the new iMac 27" loaded before Christmas just received it last week.

I also order the Promise Pegasus 18T thunderbolt raid 5 with six 3T drives. Here are the speed test results.

I used 1G file transfer on all test. This system is very fast.

1920 x 1020 10 Bit I/O Transactions 1GB fileFrame MB/sec
Read Write
5718.3 1573.6

2048 x 1556 10 Bit

Read Write
5515.7 910.3

3840 X 2160 10 Bit
Read Write
5626.7 912.1

4096 x 2160 10 Bit
Read Write
5444.5 884.6

Over 5000 READ?!?!?! That's nuts.

These speeds are the external "Promise Pegasus 18T thunderbolt raid 5 with six 3T drives."

What NLE are you using to edit? I'd like to know what you playback in RCX and Premiere is.

Do you have the option to test and publish a bigger file transfer test, say 100G?

Probably need to slide that 'ol decimal over to the left one spot.

I thought Mac Pro 5,1 was actually Sata III. Or am I thinking of the earlier model MBP where certain serials actually began using 6G?

Yes, it's sad how antiquated they are these days. The Mac Pro's optical drives plug into the same SATA ports on the motherboard that hard drives do, so they are also limited to SATA II, which is no problem because no optical drive comes close to maxing out that bus speed. PCIe lanes are totally separate from SATA, and are much faster.

Thanks Elliott.

I'd be happy with those speeds. What kind of playback resolution are you getting in RCX and CS6?
