Dear Redusers?

I have three drives in a software raid for speed and I am rendering my footage
between this raid and a single drive. I hear that normally a transfer rate is 80mb/s on single drives and I am getting less than 1mb/s and occasionally up to 4mb/s according to my mac activity monitor??

This is on an 8core mac with 16 gb ram and NO redrocket.

Is something horribly wrong or am I just misunderstanding?
Thanks all!

If you're transcoding RED footage you are most likely waiting for each frame to Debayer, so doesn't matter how fast your drives are.

With a Red Rocket this becomes realtime so your drive speed will make a difference.

Also depends on how that single drive is connected. SATA (internal) will be much faster than USB or FireWire.

So if that is the case - would transcoding on my macbook be slower than on my macpro. I mean one hour of footage is taking 3-4 days to render and my main machine is being wasted if the raid and processors are not being utilized?

Plus, just so I understand. When you say realtime, do you mean that three minutes of footage, with a rocket, will be transcoded in three minutes? Like a three minute raw clip will become a 2k pro res in three minutes?

Yup, with a RED ROCKET, three minutes of footage would take three minutes to transcode.

Without a ROCKET, if you're transcoding to 1080, you are best off setting your 4K Debayer quality to 1/2 Good. Unless you have a lot of high ISO footage, it will look just as good - if not better as it appears sharper - than doing a Full quality debayer, and it will run unbelievably faster.

Thanks Stephen,
I'm transcoding 4.5ws to 2k? should is that sill the appropriate setting?

I've tried to change my name to no avail several times btw. I will check the stickies, but it would be a lot easier if in my personal settings there was an option - just saying.

I don't know - test it out! Render one shot at Full, and one 1/2 good, and compare them side-by-side. If the 1/2 Good is just as good, do it! It can transcode significantly faster - maybe 10x faster it seems in my case, 4KHD to 1080.
