Just wondering about the practicalities of focus tracking and hoods.

Since glare is usually coming in from one side I'm wondering if there will be mounting points for a moveable red hood that allow access for the touch screen stuff.

edit:
LOL I just noticed my letter T didn't type properly. Mods if you get a min can u fix. Then again Ouchscreen instead of touchscreen is pretty funny.

Is that like "ouch, it's hot!" or "ouch, it's sharp!"? Er... Whatever. I couldn't think of anything that was actually funny, so I fixed the title for you.

I don't know how practical the combination would be... I wish I had an Epic-X with the 5" touchscreen to test things like that. :)

Easy - Red just needs to come out with prosthetic finger extensions

But seriously - That is a good question, I use a hoodman on my 5.6 with the elastic staps.. that certainly wouldn't work. Perhaps a swing away design like a mattebox?

or we all move to lighting our sets with cigars and not worry about hoods at all ...

Or just pull the REDMOTE from your pocket, back of cam, from around your neck, etc....?

This is a really good question...

Professor Farnsworth can always be relied upon for a solution.

I'm gonna make a guess here and say they're resistive touchscreens, in which case a stylus will work nicely. If they're capacitive, you can still get a stylus but they'll be a little inelegant.

Another approach to circumvent the problem would be to use the touchscreen just a tablet and use a separate monitor obviouly showing a cursor with the sunhood.

I had thought of that, just like we use wacom graphics tablets to draw while looking at the screen, we would use the RED touchscreen and look at a passive monitor.

However herein lies an error. When I'm using a screen I see a cursor and that cursor moves as I move the wacom pen. The only way this would work is if we also saw a cursor on the passive screen representing where the finger is on the touchscreen. The error is that we continuously correct our placement by watching the cursor and focus shifting like that may not work.

This is why I suggested a moveable 2 side sunhood in the first post. The key to a moveable 2 side sunhood would be how it mounts to the monitor. I'm still interested in the idea of the passive / active monitor as a solution but just can't see it happening practically. Please enlighten me if you think of a way.

capactive will be an issue in extreme cold too , with ur fingers freezing off it won't sense anything. times like that, might just better to break out that hardware follow focus. I'm sure the touch screen focusing allows as an additional option, and will help a lot especially in those extreme shallow dof shots. but for the most part a REAL FF and a skilled AC won't be phased out anytime soon.

I just realized that I am assuming the touchscreen is attached to the camera. If it were wireless then a lot of glare problems would be reduced.

we have a few tricks up our sleeve for the hood/touchscreen combo.. and remember, you can always use the REDmote or side handle.

revisiting this topic - I would love to hear more about this solution Jarred/Jim/RED
(just saw m8 un-boxing video where Gibby and Ketch tried a 4 sided hood)

edit: congrats Gibby & Ketch

This is an interesting point. Maybe red will make an app that can red and send
the same signals as the redmote

If a touch screen is to be used, then it needs a sacrificial cover, may be one of those Schneider Rhino glass type covers would work unless Red have something in mind, I guess the screen will still function. A grubby screen would be not good. We have a big touch screen on one audio device here and its not good to be eating pizza when operating it, strange and unexpected things happen.
