My Red Touch 5" touch screen monitor doesn't work very well. I often have to press an option 5 or 6 times before it accepts it.

Does this mean my monitor is faulty, or is this due to a current firmware fault?

Anyone else having this problem?

Get ahold of your bomb squad rep they will certainly help ya out.

Best of luck

Hi Lu,

Yes, I have spoken to my rep, Alan Piper.
He is a great guy. But him and his team are now on holiday until about 3 Jan.

He has invited me to take my camera and screen up to the office in Pinewood in Jan.

But in the meantime, I am wondering if anyone else has had the same issue and found any workarounds?

Yes, I have the same issue indoors with the touch screen. But when I'm out and its humid, the touch screen works beautifully. In my understanding the question is of the electromagnetic and especially of the electric properties of the fingers which vary a lot. Consequently, it's likely an adjustment issue that Red will fix at some point.

What firmware are you using? The sensativity was drastically improved in the last couple of builds. Like doubled the responsiveness to my fingers.

Even so, I expect to make 3-4 attempts for some areas, like the little guy in the corner to switch menu banks, and know that most will work the first time.

just tape a stylus to the thing if you're having trouble... apparently some people's fingers don't jive with it. it seems that is improving though :)

Hi Antony,

Have you tried keeping your fingertip at a 90 degree angle to the screen? I find the screen is less responsive if I let my finger flatten out (like in your video), but if I reduce the contact point I don't have any problems. The submenu options are very close together, so user selections need to be precise.

On the tiny submenus mine behaves like this. On the easy to slide ones like color temp, shutter, frame rate etc. it works 100% of the time. I believe the issue is more about selecting two things at the same time than not registering your finger. Stylus may help, I'm going to try.

@Tom: thanks, I will order one of those Griffin stylii.

@jimhare: v2.0.5

really? Is this on a particular build? Ive not had any problems.......

I've never experienced this on any build (on multiple cameras). I've had difficulty unlocking the icon at times because of its close proximity to the corner of the screen, but I've always been able to unlock it.

OK, my Griffin stylus arrived and I tested it out.

The stylus has improved the performance of the touch screen, but it is still not good enough for normal use.

So, is this a physical problem with the touch screen, or a firmware issue?

I have on several occasions. In fact Brigham and I experimented with this together on two different Epics and the only way we could unlock was to reinstall firmware. Happened once on a shoot where I was able to unlock once (after trying for 5 minutes straight) but that was the only time. Haven't tried with 2.05, must check that.

I'm seeing similar on my two touchscreens. Coders please read.

I'm seeing similar on my two touchscreens. Coders please read.

I have the same bug on both of my cameras.

For the coders working on this:
When you get a new XY from the screen, please add a 'dead band' for the position so that if the user does have a tiny X or Y position movement during a button tap, it is *not* interpreted as a desire to scroll the menu.
What is happening is the firmware is thinking that you are trying to scroll the list, and therefor it fails to register the user action as a 'tap'.

I found if you tap very carefully it does take the tap as a tap. If there is even a microscopic 'drag' caused by a rolling finger motion, the tap is missed ( and you get a microscopic drag that does nothing at all )

Another note: The touch screen is not as sensitive as an iphone screen. Maybe they can up the gain ? But I'll bet that gain is fixed with the screen vendors firmware. I guess I'll keep licking my fingers ;)

Also: the max screen brightness is about right for a bright indoor lab environment. They need to spec about 3X the NITS for the screen to give it more outdoor functionality, even with a hood.

I'm trying to help out here, my comments are meant to be helpful, not disruptive.
