Does anyone have an idea about the upcoming Touch Focus Tracking means?

When reading that I assume I'll be tracing my finger over the touchscreen and Scarlet will focus on the part where my finger is.

Is this a correct assumption?

Yes tis correct. There is apparently three ways to focus manual, touch and auto. Touch allows you to select an aread of the frame for foucs. How far and advanced this is we do not know.

By tracking, do they mean that you'll select the object (i.e. a person's face) you want focused, and the lense will follow that object as it moves throughout the shot? If so, that would be remarkable... perhaps too remarkable even for RED.

I assume the tracking would be via touch.
So if I want to focus on a persons face I touch the face on the screen.
If that person moves I would follow the face on the screen with my finger => tracking by touch.

If that's the case then it would be really awesome.

The iPhone 3GS can do it, so why shouldn't the Scarlet be able to, too?

but with the iPhone, you can't trace track and you also can't track while doing video on the iPhone. and even then, it's focusing is nowhere near perfect, often hunting to find the right focus. of course, the technology and concept is there, so if red can develp it to a more practical level, such as the ones discussed above, then i welcome that technology. If its just going to perform like the iPhone does, then no thanks.

Any number of $200 compact stills cameras can do it. It's called face detection and the camera uses a lookup table of patterns to recognise human heads, draw a rectangle around them and track with them as they move in the frame. The technology is a few years old now. This is even simpler in ways as it doesn't need to recognise a face shape, just grab a snapshot of whatever you point at on the touch screen and follow it as it moves.

Hi everyone
imagine if it would be possible to hook up EVF and touchscreen with one scarlet, and while using EVF as your main monitor you could trackfocus with your finger/thumb on the touchscreen lcd using it similar as a laptop's trackpad, in the same time seeing a little target through the EVF where your finger is located ( which part of the framing is in focus) Now think about it? make sense? heh.

had this idea poping into my head yesterday, thought i might share it :)

If this works, it will revolutionize the way we shoot movies. To be able to track a subject, in glorious shallow depth, without having (or needing) a focus puller? The idea blows the mind.

Instead we'll need a large screen and a focus-tracker - one with small fingers I might add.
