Apologies if this might be redundant or has been discussed on another thread/forum...

Considering the ability to control focus with the LCD on the Epic, how might this new feature affect current focus practices?

I've had no experience with Touch Focus and really first noticed it during an interview posted by Tonaci Tran with Ted Shilowitz in Vietnam. I recommend it to those who haven't seen it yet.

Back to my original thought - I doubt TouchFocus will completely replace FF or wireless options, but I'm not completely sure; which is why I am asking for any information anyone might have.

Thanks a bunch.

Just as auto-exposure is a welcome tool in certain situations, touch-focus will be great for run and gun jobs.

Focus pulling is as much getting the focus right as it is timing and understanding of the story. So - in my eyes touch focus will be a godsend for camercrews consisting of 1 person, and might be a useful tool to quickly gauge focus points for 1st ACs.

It'll always be about talent, and how that talent uses the available tools.

That's exactly what I'm thinking about.

Rack focus shots, moving subjects, that whole deal.

I wonder whether or not the touch focus on the Epic is powerful enough to challenge traditional focus methods for the above mentioned shots?

I do agree and was happy to realize that this new feature could possibly eliminate the need for an AC on small productions or shoots. Exciting times.

Well not exciting if you're an AC, that is....

Thank you Martin. Well said.

If it uses contrast detection which appears likely then the lag will be a bit to long to focus on the go. It will also have the problems associated with low contrast objects/conditions as seen in still photography. However, a benefit for run and gun focus clarification on small lcd screens where it is very hard to focus by eye it will be beneficial.

If the red gunner has phase detection as is a potential looking at it, then this will be good for on the run focusing because it doesn't need to seek to find the focus point. DSLR's are now getting micro seconds using this method. I am not actually sure if phase detection can be had off camera, but i can't see why not as long as it can communicate with the lens.

See here for an explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autofocus

Red always has tricks up their sleeves, and a staff of highly intelligent people, so count on that as well.

That's because phase detect has to go through the lens and with a mirror on in live view , can't use phase detect. Shooting video without live view would be incredibly hard. They have to redesign cameras before its going to happen, which no doubt most companies are working on. I have heard the new sony does it but haven't tested it. I forgot how they did the work around.

Would be interesting for anyone attending REDucation this week to ask TED to show it and how it works on EPIC at the community day!

I completely agree.

I'll be very thankful to anyone who does and shares that information. I'd be there for it, but flights out of Central America right now seem to be in the kidney/arm range...

I like focus fingerer better.

I knew I liked you when I saw your profile picture on here.

Now, I know you have an excellent (if somewhat raunchy) sense of humor.

I thought I was the only one....
