Toshiba unveils 55inch 4K glasses free 3DTV

Yep...the one thing that I was bummed about is that there are still lenses in the equation between me and the pictures. It's just that the TV is wearing the glasses, now.

This is very likely the same AS3D Toshiba set I saw at IFA in Germany yesterday. They showed it in 4K 2D mode connected to a JVC 4K camcorder prototype (4 x HDMI cables were used to to connect the two) and in autostereoscopic 3D mode in special screening booths. While the 4K 2D mode looked pretty impressive, the glassless 3D looked like shit. Give me current active or passive 3D over that crap any time.

Yeah, I've seen this unit at a place where they got 4 of them for evaluation...

The 4K mode does not look as crisp, by a lot, as a Sony projector for example, which it should, given the smaller display, but it does look far better than good HD, so that's a step in the right direction. The 3D is really not up there yet, you have a super narrow angle of acceptable coverage, whether the TV is tracking you or not, and outside of that range, the effect is very inconsistent, almost non existent. Then again, at its optimal settings, the stereo effect is still not as good as a properly set up active display, but this is definitely one of the technologies of the future. However, $11K is an absolute monstrosity for what this set delivers. I appreciate that first gen products are expected to be expensive, another one of those arbitrary "rules" to justify profiteering I guess, but with what things cost nowadays, both to manufacture and to buy, this is an astronomically silly amount. But yes, it was interesting to see...

We might all have 4k TVs. And we all might be watching 4k content, because it's "just there". And there is no reason not to have it since it's the same price (kind of like 3D TVs that most people don't watch 3D content on.)

I don't think there is any technical reason 4k couldn't be mainstream in 5 years. I just don't see people caring. At all.

I think 4k is the Super-Audio CD of video. Blu-Ray is *only* just now going mainstream. 3D TV is far from mainstream.

Hey, I just thought of a big problem with stereo... sitting upright. Not a problem in a theater (which is why I never thought of it before), but at home I often lay down on the couch while watching a movie.

No glasses?

Yours sincerely,
guy who wears glasses, and doesn't particularly enjoy putting on a second pair of shitty lenses over his them and watching movies through a muddy haze.

Get a pair of clip-on 3d glasses from Amazon. Best $9 I've spent in a while...
