  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Toshiba 4k display prototype

Like most other consumer / prosumer TV sets, this Toshiba prototype is actually quad-HD and not full 4K. Not that it really matters much... I think for final distribution 4K on the consumer end is going to be 4xHD, just as we have 1920x1080 as opposed to actual 2K.

Nice to see Toshiba entering the ring with a prototype model! Hopefully their loss of HD-DVD and unwillingness to adopt Blu-Ray will help them push forward toward 4K even faster! Samsung/Sony (they share their LCD fab plant), LG and Panasonic/Matsushita have all shown 4xHD panels in the past at various trade shows or industry events. Nothing available to buy just yet. Samsung is the only one of those companies that has shown a true 4K panel with 4096 pixels across.

Anyway, I think as soon as RED-RAY presents itself as a viable 4K delivery system, there will be ways to display it. Display manufacturers have already demonstrated that they can make them. I'm just worried that early adopters will have to pay $1K for their RED-RAY player and $20K for a 55" display to connect it to.

What is full 4K for general ?

Spending Jim's money

Spending Jim's money

In the spring of 2008 the Madman was talking about RED entering the 4K projector market... then, evidently , somebody changed his meds

Anyone familiar with my bank account would testify that Jim is a far better businessman than I, that said:

Perhaps RED could function as a technology incubator for the digital cinema community. Obviously its easy for me to spend Jim's money, especially in this economy, but it sure seems like some private VC funding for innovation in the space could be a tide that raises all boats.

The ecosystem for film and HD is well developed and that maturity is one of the reasons producers feel comfortable with it. I believe deeply in the vision of high quality imagery (far beyond the F900/Varicam level) electronically created (RedOne/F35/D21/etc) as a legitimate alternative to film. A robust support infrastructure is developing rapidly but with the current credit crunch some of the key development needed to accelerate the shift might be sped up by a deep pocketed visionary.

What is full 4K for general ?

4096 pixels wide is "4K", just as 2048 is "2K".

While a full 4K display or projector is going to be desirable for post production, quad-HD (3840x2160) is the next logical step on the distribution end, IMO.

Any news on cost of this unit when it hits market? What input would it take or is it mainly just for upscaling HD?

Yep as expected another 3,8K which want to look like 4K! Another marketing blsht.
Just only 3,840 x 2,160p. But if it will be cheap and good why not.
First 3,8K LCD was 4 years back from some Taiwanese LCD manufacturer. But I guess it was like 4 HD panels glued together.

I cant believe we are Scoffing at 4x 1080P because its not true 4K. I know its not the same but still impressive.

For me if I can't control picture in 1:1 pixel resolution it's issue
Wonder how they call real 4K panel? REAL 4K or FULL 4K?

Yeah they should be clear about the terminology, but I know they wont fix that, if they can get more consumers to buy it without knowing the difference.

The Dell 30" LCD is 2560x1600, right?

Why not chop up and use 4 of those for a 4K monitor?
