Hi Tom, interested to know what you thought of the film Okuribito (2008) (aka Departures)? I've only seen two of the films in your Top 10, Spirited Away and City of God. Both movies blew me away.

Tom's list is so similar to what mine might be that I better see "Ghost in the Shell" because it's the only one I haven't seen yet!
In case you guys haven't seen it - an *awesome* website where you can see many movies like this, and other classics that are not easily available...

I had myself a Bunuel marathon a couple of night ago. Am still walking around twitching and muttering.

Tom,
What percentage of those films were shot digitally? Just Curious.

Awesome list! I'd keep "Spirited Away" and "Mulholland Drive"
and add these:
Donnie Darko - philosophy masquerading as entertainment
District 9 - best use of location setting in a feature film ever
Frozen River - probably my favorite of the lot for its use of setting and pulling amazing results from no-name actors, Melissa Leo is pure genius
The Cove - re-writes so many genres, has had a real-world impact in a taut thriller
Walk the Line - Joaquin Phoenix got the shim sham, Johnny Cash notwithstanding, still a great study of one man's struggles
The Story of the Weeping Camel - most. heartbreaking. film. ever.
Lost in Translation - best use of silence in a film, ever
The Triplets of Belleville - sooo original and quirky
The Fog of War - how did errol morris ever pull this off?
Australia - underrated, Gone with the Wind set in Australia
Cloverfield - a monster movie where the monster was a big macguffin, it was all about how people behave under fire
That would give me 13, though, if I had to knock off 3, it would be Walk the Line and Australia. And Cloverfield, I guess...
I like quirky films, and I like films that are deeper than they seem, without really trying...
