Get a FF with reversible gears and make everything a little easier. Telling someone to go back and forth is not a solution.

there ya go. reversible ff will do the trick.

however, it really isnt hard to pull the other way (in case you don't have a reversible) Maybe im different because I can write with both hands.. but my point is.. you wont get laughed off a set

If I told you to reverse your right and your left foot while driving a car and then called you incompetent for running into someone or something, that wouldn't be very fair and I'd bet you would. A good AC should have second nature prone to one direction. This is a reflex and is hard to reverse just like that. Get a FF with reversible gears and make everything a little easier. Agreed!

I only use an AC when the budget allows, which is usually when we have the budget to rent a Zeiss Super Speed set.
Most of the time I'm shooting by myself which means I pull focus.
I got rid of my Nikon glass some time ago for this very reason.
I replaced the Nikon set with a Zeiss Contax set which focus like the Zeiss Super Speeds. That made all the difference. As a matter of fact my clients could not tell a difference between the quality of the Zeiss Contax and Zeiss Super Speed lenses. So I have not rented lenses at all in 2008.
Of course it could also be that the clients are cheep and hate to pay for rentals!

Thanks again for all the help and advice. There's obviously more than one way to plow a field and you shouldn't knock the plowing until you check the harvest.

I've narrowed my choices to these two options:

1. Nikon 17-35mm 2.8, 24-70 2.8, and 80-200 2.8, 50mm 1.4 = $3900

2. OR, The standard or Hi-speed set from this page: http://rplens.com/products.htm (everything comes declicked, step up rings for mattebox, gears for FF, etc) = $3500 & $3300

Any opinions before I purchase?

These are very good lenses.
If you go with the high speed set, you will miss 24mm and 105mm.
If you go with the standard speed set, you will miss the f/1.4.

I'm in middle of shooting a film using the Nikon 17-35mm and can tell you with utmost certainty that you'll have trouble pulling focus on it. Not to say it can't be done, as we've produced some great shots with it. But the throw is extremely short. You'll be going through a lot of trial and error and extra takes. It should be noted that I'm not using a follow focus setup (Curt, please hurry with my Impero/Inclino!).

Conversely, my 85mm AIS 1.4 is a dream and produces flat out GORGEOUS images to boot. I would seriously look into finding one of these in great shape.

About the new Red 300 mm some one can share their opinion or coments.
