  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We love all the enthusiasm and excitement that you all show for RED and the custom things you want to do. However, I'm going to ask everyone to please please stop reverse engineering the file format to build custom tools. Not because we want to keep things closed, but to make sure everything is done right and is compatible with everything else.

Some thoughts on this process:

1) RED IS IN DEVELOPMENT

2) we are no Microsoft or Apple (for example) with finished products and time (at this moment) to launch an SDK and quality documentation. We are still BUILDING all of this

3) hence, we are in a state of flux quite often, like with the file format. Once we stabilize things like this we'd reach a point where we want to talk about SDK's, documentation, etc.

4) there are unused features in the current file format that need to be consistent and these features will soon be used in newer versions of the software etc.

5) clips can consist of multiple 2 GB files that are linked etc., there's a bunch of other stuff like this that makes rolling your own tools non trivial

You're probably going to tell me that you don't care about all of this and as long as it works now you'll be happy and don't care that it might break in the future. We, however care A LOT about this. Here's why:

A) a year down the road from when a new (updated) tool from us doesn't work with the files generated by such a tool people are going to blame us since they forgot they used an unsupported tool (or it might've been unclear)

B) you can imagine what will happen if such a tool is used in a big post house (you can't control that guys, anyone can download what you do here!!) or on a big feature film. Are you going to support them when stuff breaks down?

We won't be able to support such productions that use files created by unofficial tools...

All of this work seems to result from love for RED and general curiosity, which is very cool and flattering. We definitely want to support other software and the excitement of the community. But I ask you to give us time to do this so it will be a better experience for everyone involved. We are still developing our own product(s) and just haven't had the time or manpower to simply sit down and look at this so we can do it properly.

What you all seem to want is a way to trim the files? What if RED delivers a tool to do this? Could you live with that for now?

Please think about what I've said. Let's help each other build the community and tools that benefits everyone. Just please give us a little bit of time to make this happen...

Thank you for your consideration!
