  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tonight's Lunar Eclipse - Rained Out?

my amateur attempt...

That's not bad at all and I bet it will post process nicely. What camera? Tighten up the aperture or lower the ISO a bit, you're blowing out some of the top.

I'm hoping the R1MX will still show some stars along with the moon itself. I wish I had the Nikon D3s along instead of the NEX-5. But it's in Golden and I'm in Steamboat. Did I mention it's farking cold out here? We have a propane heater, and blankets, but I think it's about -14F. Glad there's no wind.

Edit> I do have to admit that I'm a bit worried I'm under-exposed on the R1MX. I had the moon as bright, but not blown to start and I'm exposed for ISO 1000, so should have some room to pull in post without noise creeping up too fast. Hopefully.

Paul,

nice shot.

I missed it. Overslept. Also at the edge of eclipse circle that had about an hour to see it...

I may need to pack it up soon. My wife works nights. She might find me sleeping in the front yard with cameras, mounts, chicken wings and beers cans strewn about. Kind of hard to explain...

Sanjin has spoke to me! Hello there! I feel blessed by you tonight. It's winter where you are? It's still fall here...

As the moon emerges from the Earth's shadow I've had to repo so I have also reduced the shutter to 1/24 at f5.6 to compensate for all that light.

Can't say that every day.

Yeah Paul I'm starting to feel like a werewolf here. Standing here all night staring at the
Moon. The light keep it away!

Not a 'good' pic, but I think it's cool. It's actually cleaner than that. A JPEG/noise thing perhaps- not sure about these intranets. Good night crazy camera brothers!

Jeff- a sorry little 7D with an extra sorry little Canon x-250mm POS lens. I got a time lapse running on a state of the art Canon XTI with a POS Sigma 10-20. Again, you guys take good pictures, I take weird, bad pictures that make me smile. Stay warm.

Yes good night all.

I was playing around with timelapse on my d90 last night/this morning & ran into a problem that I didn't know how to fix.

I live down in Louisiana & there was a very fine mist in the air so fine that I didn't notice till my timelapse shots began looking a little fuzzy & got slightly dimmer. I resorted to wiping my lens between shots but figured there had to be a better way to deal with this problem since timing out the wipes & not bumping the tripod were difficult. Anyone have the solution for when I run into this again?

Here's another timelapse question for you guys:
What's the longest shutter you can get away with then shooting the moon as it's moving through the sky so it doesn't blur? I was dialing mine in at around 2 seconds but never was happy with the sharpness (or my focus, but that's another question).

Many lessons learned last night. New respect gained for you timelapse fellas.

I think I want to cry... The R1 timelapse didn't work out. I think it had to do with the tracking mount I guess, lots of blurry frames mixed with some good frames. Going through it, trying to salvage all the good frames. Vibration was probably the culprit, but weird, the mount seemed so smooth and our test shots, although brief, were smooth. Some segments of the timelapse are smooth...

Meh...

Edit> I also was worried about being under-exposed. Turns out we were a bit over-exposed. Some of the higher up haze cleared off after starting the timelapse sequence and the moon brightened up.

I took a chance and raced down to southern New Mexico.

The sky cleared right in time and I got a shot of the fully eclipsed moon gliding through my frame with stars. It looks beautiful and otherworldly.

That eclipse was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. The moon was pink and orange, and balanced in the sky against the stars and nebulae near it. Stunning!

Tom,

great and looking forward to see the footage...

Ethan I got owned by mist/fog on lens when I was shooting in Louisianna last month.

Perhaps a Kendrick firefly lens warmer will work? I did not have mine handy to try.

Hello Jeff,

What sort of mount are you using? I have a Meade LX200 with a newly machined gearing system and aluminum cradle I had made that will support a Red ONE and along with the LX200 scope. This is a big system and I still needed to make extensive modifications to make it work. The only other portable scope mount that I've used is a mount that I made back in 2000 to track the sky with a Arri 35-3. I've attached a photo of that mount. As you can see it's sort of a pain in the ass to move around but it works!
