Will we see a mass exodus of FCP diehards moving to ADOBE and AVID, or will recent converts just switch back to the "AWSOME" FCP-X? Will yesterdays big announcements from BMD Resolve be overwhelmed with Apple Color-x? I'm getting my popcorn ready. The live streaming bandwidth better be good and the presentation better be in full 4K stereoscopic 3D.

Feel free to watch this space as the Reduser family voices their opinions and criticisms.

cheers.

I started with Avid... Great tool but does not have the mastering tools I like in FCP. If I was just an editor and not needing to fine tune and finish my projects in the box.. I'd use Avid. If was edit & finishing in the box.. Use FCP.
Both are great tools.
Bit like RED V ARRI. Pros and cons for both, but who really cares..

If the latest greatest FCP comes out with R3D native, 4k squence timeline and works in 64bit space.... well I'll never return to Avid.

Premier will start to impress, but I'm not big on the rendering all the time, But i do like the direct talking with AE. thats cool.

I hope for a great upgrade and if so I will definitely jump onto the FCP bandwagon. I currently use Premiere and I've been unhappy with Adobe's habit of not fixing some problems in updates, and then making you pay for an upgrade (with few extra features). And now they want me to pay for a point update!

I know that Apple's release schedules and all that aren't that much better, but I have been very happy with Logic Pro. Apple released an update giving you 64 bit mode free of charge.

This link just popped up in a post on MR.

"But from the info that my sources are giving me, I would bet on the following:
1. Final Cut Pro 8 will be completely different:
Obvious, maybe... But the new version will be completely new from the ground up. It may be called FCP 8 or FCP X or whatever, but it will be a completely new piece of software written specifically for OS 10.7 (Lion) and will not work with older OS' or processors.

2. FCP 8 will be an "editing & finishing" product:
The current version and all the previous ones, were for editing only. That's why we now have Final Cut Studio, because you currently need an entire suite of applications to finish a program. But I believe the new FCP will be more like Smoke, or Avid DS -- You will be able to edit, color correct, composite, create titles and 3-D effects, AND audio post, then conform/output to DVD/web/iphone etc. ALL WITHOUT LEAVING FCP."

There is more but that's the idea...

If the Edit & Finish part is true, then I'm happy.

Honestly if FCP were to stay almost exactly the same and just add proper support for prores and h264 that would be enough. Color-X is what worries me more... I'm really hoping they took the technology behind shake to add decent motion tracking, HSL keys, and vastly improved power windows. If they don't make these changes then it's not a matter of simply stepping to the side for me - if I'm gonna change it's going to be with higher-end software. Color is great for the price, but I'm to the point where I need better.

I couldn't agree more. I still use Shake as often as I can, in spite of the UI, because it's so damn powerful.

And I'm ready to pull the trigger on Resolve if the new FCS doesn't deliver.

What I really want is true integration, just like you get with a DAW app. I never have to leave a DAW app to do processing of files and then re-import the files back to my project. I want my video workstation to be the same way.

Likely... all 3.

I'm sure FCP-X will be really cool for some things... a bit "v1.0" for others. Definitely worth buying.

Avid is only $1000 if you have FCP . I just can't imagine Apple matching the depth and precision of its tools in FCP-X version 1... FCP 7 came close but still wasn't quite there. Not saying FCP-X won't be awesome in many other ways, just I know I'm going to miss certain Avid features.

Also - Avid is moving in the direction of Media Composer and Pro Tools becoming one program which would be... EXTREMELY POWERFUL. Integrating top-notch audio with top-notch video editing is more interesting to me than inventing a new realtime gestural editing system.

Premiere is practically free if you use Photoshop and After Effects. I always said CS6 or CS7 would be great. CS5.5 finally added dual-system sound support, so that's promising. If FCP-X turns out to be buggy and I'm on a job with a lot of graphics work, not dramatic narrative editing, I'll probably give it a go over Avid and FCP-X.

Then there's also Storm which might turn out to be quite a good FCP-X competitor.

None of them will likely come close to DaVinci for color grading, so I will stick with that.

Main question is if FCP-X can take on Smoke or Avid DS or Scratch for finishing. Probably it'll kick ass in many ways... and not come close in other ways.

Hmm this is going to be a long afternoon. I can't find a stream link. Yikes, not looking good.

Good call Steve.

"Additionally, Wirecast will be used by Pixel Corps to live stream the Final Cut Pro User Group (FCPUG) SuperMeet at NAB on Tuesday evening, April 12, from Bally’s Hotel. This is the second FCPUG SuperMeet being streamed this year by Pixel Corps using Wirecast. Live broadcasts will be available for viewing on Pixel Corp’s website (www.pixelcorps.com/live) and the FCPUG SuperMeet website www.supermeet.com."

Here is the link to the Telestream company's NABShow page: Telestream, Inc.

I would just love to see sound conforming options updated. No More Cinema Tools for this, please!....
To simply be able to track sound meta data within your bin of clips when working from self contained QTs is sorely needed!!

I can't wait for everyone to over aggressively let the world know how much they love it or hate it! Absolutely can't wait! . .

My wish list:
No.1 - 100% stability. With complete software and hardware control, Apple should be able to make FCP bomb proof and rock solid!
No.2 - Background rendering
No.3 - Full CPU/GPU - Open CL & Cuda support. I want to reach the zero render stage if this is ever going to be possible!!!
No.4 - Ful integration of Soundtrack Pro + vastly improved Motion into FCP

I could list dozens of things I'd like beyond this but these are my priorities.

Scott

No, Apple is not allowing any live streaming.

But what about this: "Wirecast will be used by Pixel Corps to live stream the Final Cut Pro User Group (FCPUG) SuperMeet at NAB on Tuesday evening, April 12, from Bally’s Hotel."

Maybe that was the plan before Apple took over the Supermeet? I hope not.
