Well, if I had my username and password in time I would have.
Let's don't forget what the original Scarlet was all about. Four+ years ago, I saw a feature in Popular Science Mag introducing the Red Scarlet that was supposedly shipping in about 6 months. 3K, fixed zoom lens...useable for about $4,000. Pretty darn exciting..I sent the article to everyone with the subject line "my next camera!" I visited the the Red.com site all the time and got very excited about the whole Red 'thing'.

Now let's look at what Red has done since then: Shown a few photos of 'the scarlet'..even one where it was under glass like it was the friggin' Hope diamond, Released a very pretty clip of a lizard supposedly shot with it. Delayed the release virtually indefinitely. Released another 5 figure+ priced camera (the Epic) and moved their offices to Hollywood. All while continually yakking about the Scarlet and how it will be worth the wait.

Now that we've seen it and apparently can buy it...or at least put down a deposit...ooooh take my money please!!... we find that they've simply released yet another camera that's easily $12K if you want to actually use it rather than just stare at it and groove on owning it. 3 times the original projected price and NO LENS! Wow, a 14 MP still camera too... I sold one of those in 2003. I guarantee you all those magazine covers were only shot with a Red camera when someone from Red took the $50K Hasselblad still camera, that shoots 60MP files, out of the photographer's hand, and replaced it with the Red so he could pop off a few frames... probably reluctantly.

Don't get me wrong, Red makes great cameras and as a private company is entitled to run their biz any way they want, but you're crazy if you believe they haven't ridden this Scarlet thing and all the free publicity it came with all the way to the bank, then effectively giving the 'high hard one' to folks like us who actually expected something close to what they originally promoted. If I was REALLY conspiratorial, I might say they've had thousands of this camera sitting in boxes for 2 years just driving the anticipatory frenzy to a fever pitch, then announcing it to drive sales.

Last night Jim Jannard dramatically said that the Scarlet has 'grown up'... He should have said 'had to catch up' If they had done what they said, when they said, they would have sold millions and probably dealt the Canon 5D Mk II a death blow. But instead they've just built another rental camera AND gotten untold amounts of free publicity with their 4 year 'ad campaign'-this redefines guerrilla marketing.
Never has my 5D looked so nice.

I'm glad it's $14,000 for the package, every one the street would have one, this is not a hyundai
I love my 5D but let's not compare 1k to 4k, just don't go there or HDRX
It's well worth it !! MY 5d and 7d are on sale

SCARLET # 0593

True .... if 3 yrs ago red didnt mention 3k for 3k .. I wont build my interest into red scarlet

Just only one question left there how many old Reduser members BANNED today after the announcement of Scarlet lol perhaps jimm got busy in that now, anyways 4 years of waiting over here just over which stared from $3000 end up with & $14000 (without lenses) lol great work RED team appreciate your dedicated hard work to make a movie camera which most of Red fan boys can't afford but also it was a nice business trick to make them wait for years....

Good Luck Jamse jannard

What's 'the lock'?

And 'nonsense'? The only thing that's probably nonsense is them having the camera made already for 2 years...but the rest is fact and has already happened.

How did you got your number greg? My order went through-my card was charged- but I haven't got any number confirmed...

LOL. Did you just use the word Canon 5d in the same sentence as Scarlet X?

LOL!

The point is NOT the quality of the cameras images...it's that Red has been saying forever that this unit would be priced in a way that it's not. If they had announced these specs 4 years ago no one would have paid attention ...another cinema quality camera for $14k. The actual number doesn't matter...at a certain point the camera is not affordable to own. Red originally led everyone to believe it would be.

whine whine...

you can make movies or make excuses.

RED delivered a knock-out punch. There are other great camera options out there. I own several of them. The harder RED pushes, the cheaper those options become. Lucky lucky you.

huh? 4k for 9000 and you said no one would have paid attention even 4 years ago? You realize 4 years ago a $17,500 camera was released with 4k resolution and far less options far less dynamic range than the Scarlet and it took the industry by storm, now a 4k camera released at 9k$ and you whine...huh?

1)The point is NOT the quality of the cameras images...it's that Red has been saying forever that this unit would be priced in a way that it's not.
2) If they had announced these specs 4 years ago no one would have paid attention ...another cinema quality camera for $14k.
3) The actual number doesn't matter...at a certain point the camera is not affordable to own. Red originally led everyone to believe it would be.

So much wrong here.

1) EPIC-S, firstly known as "Scarlet-S35", was always priced at around 7K BRAIN ONLY. Currently, it looks like that hasn't changed significantly.
2) No one would've paid attention you say? Hah! Good one sir :)
3) As per above, no. They never "led people along" to believe it'd be affordable for less than 10K+. If you are talking about the 8X-Fixed or interchangeable, fine, but not the S35.
