I’ve preordered the new Tokina Cinema ATX 11-20mm T2.9 PL mount from Duclos Lenses. Preorders expected to ship in November 2018. My hope is it will be easy to match with the SLR Magic APO primes in post and that will use it on both my URSA Mini 4.6K and BMPCC4K cameras. It is offered in other lens mounts including LPL, EF, mFT, F, E. This is a compact zoom 95mm outside dimensiom (same as the SLR Magic APO primes) with 86mm threads. The lens represents a lens redesign, not simply a rehousing of their earlier 11-20mm f/2.8 Zoom. If you pre-order before November 30, 2018, you will also receive three Tokina Pro IRND 86mm screw-on filters, IRND 0.6, 0.9, 1,2.

I’ll update this thread when I receive the lens.

I think it is pretty naive to think that any lens manufacturer would spend $1million to sell what, couple of hundred (cine) lenses for $5000 each. I'm pretty sure it is a factory rebarrel with maybe some coating tweaks. Glass changes are pretty much off limits due to cost. No matter what the salesmen tell you.... ;-)

Come on Jacek - these lenses are $2399 each - not $5000 ;)

By the way - I have my order in.

and I'm stoked.

The 11-20 design is the absolute crown jewel of the Tokina wide angle zoom designs, at least of the ones I've experienced 11-16 v1, 11-16v2, 14-20, and then the prized 11-20.

There you go Dan. I doubt at that price they would even mess with the coatings. My point is that at that price and market size mechanical rebarrel is a stretch not to mention optical redesign ;-)
OK got it now- new/updated optical design from the 11-16... well obviously ;-)

Is it worth an upgrade from the 11-16v2 I have? Also interested to know a comparison of sensor coverage of both lenses, say on a Gemini.

I would say it’s worth the upgrade... but it depends on how you like to use it...

If you’re using the stills version and like the light weight and usually hand focus it rather than with a follow focus or motor, then maybe upgrade to the stills 11-20. For me that was a noticeable transition. I’m getting the PL version to drive it with motors and so I can rent it out to people more. It’s super useful.

Is yours in PL already ? I believe the cine version has an interchangeable mount but could be wrong.

I’ll shoot some tests on Monstro and Gemini when it comes in for vignetting reference.

Michael, I ordered late August as soon as a friend forwarded the notice from Duclos Lenses. Have never prepaid for anything before so this is an adventure. Was told it should ship in early December. It’s probanly a good sign that the ship date is November.

Jacek, I trust Matt Duclos.

Kwan, it’s your call. I know the 11-16 f/2.8 has been popular at a different price point. But I always wanted a longer reach. I really like this package now as it shares physical characteristsxwith the SLR Magic APO primes in terms of dimensions and filters. I’m a fan of these smaller PL lenses with 95mm outside.

Curtis, enjoyed I Spy months ago. Probably influenced my purchase. Hey, can I blame you if this lens is a bust?

Dan, I share your enthusiasm!

I could be interested IF anyone doesn't need the Tokina IRND filters included with purchase.

Definitely improvement over the 11-16 in range. Very useful wide range with good speed to boot. I'm not a fan of Tokina primes- they are way too big. This zoom looks great I hope it performs well too. Let us know when you get it...

Following.

The best match i'd previously found was the 16mm Xeen, it has quite a soft OOF and wasn't prone to too much CA - so matched the APOs fairly well. I have a 12mm Laowa as well and that is actually remarkably good - but a single 11 to 16 could be really useful. I'd looked at the previous Tokinas and didn't think the render matched very well though. Fingers crossed

cheers
Paul

Rick i’m glad you enjoyed I Spy and i’m honored that you thought
enough of it to influence your lens buying choice.
However if you don’t like the lens be aware I rarely take responsibility for my own actions 🤣🤣😂

Joking aside, it’s a wonderful lens, plenty sharp, nice focus fall off etc.

Curtis

Jacek, I don’t think you’ll have long to wait with the shipping date moving up instead of back... I agree with your comments about large lenses. I definitely want to stay with smaller PL lenses. My only relatively large lens is an older Fujinon Cine Zoom B4 mount that I use on the URSA Mini 4.6K. SLR Magic may not have been the first manufacturer of 95mm outside dimension PL primes, but I’ve noticed that is becoming a more popular choice in the last couple of years.

Paul, for someone used to shooting most things in Super 35 format, the Tokina 11-20mm certainly may fill the need for something in the wide to ultra wide rectilinear lenses without going too extreme to use a matte box. Shooting Super 35, I’ll hopefully still be able to use the Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom matte box most of the time. That will be something to test right away. But I often shoot 2K/HD which gives me a different set of views. And when I start shooting on the BMPCC4K with HD raw, that 11-20mm will behave like a short normal to a short portrait lens so good for medium and medium closeups. So for me, it’s going to end up being my most versatile PL lens. This assumes the lens performs well, but Curtis’ experience is quite positive so I’m not really worried about it... okay not too worried!

Billy Jim, nice to know those 86mm screw-on IRND will find a good home if they are put up for adoption.

Sounds perfect for you. The misfit is a great matte box, it certainly works fine at 16mm but 11 could be a different story but as it's rubber you could just pull it back if needed. The clamp on for 95mm is great.

cheers
Paul

Paul, the Misfit Atom is rated for 14mm focal lengths. With the screw-on 86mm IRND up to 4 stops (and my 86mm B+W 486 IR Cut or SLR Magic 86mm IEND, 4 stops if needed) on the Tokina 11-20mm, another option for wider angles, when not using the 95mm clamp, is just push the matte box beyond the front of the lens barrel closer to the camera until the lens no longer shows any vignette at 11mm. So the rubber shade would still offer some protection from light flares. Hope the Tokina can handle two slim stacked filters!

Now that this lens is shipping, is there any other opinions?

Rick, Like you I own the 3 SLR Magic APO's and am weighing buying the ATX 11-20 vs. hanging on to my Rokinon cine 16mm and waiting for SLR magic to release a wide angle.

Are there any opinions on a wide angle zoom in general vs. wide primes? It seems with a zoom you'd be able to dial in just the exact mm in small increments needed to perfect the frame.

Does anyone know how much the additional mounts are (PL for example) and if it truly needs to be sent to a shop to be recalibrate when switching mounts.

I'm really interested in seeing the Samyang/Rok 16 used in tandem with the apos, do you have anything on vimeo with this combo? Thanks in advance.
