  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tokina AT-X 116 Pro DX at Birger's mount?

Thanks for the links emmanuel... quite promissing stuff there.
However unlike many others I will hold off buying any lenses for as long as I can. The reason is that I would not want to write off the importance of image stabilisation, before it has been tested. Canon has already made a 18-50 f/2.8 EF-S lens with IS and if it works it could make a huge difference in many situations. I am a bit surprised really, that people now run out to buy the L series and new nikon zooms claiming them to be a great investment due to the resale value... well if IS and VR are implemented soon in the L and FX series I wouldn´t be so shure about it.
but hey, maybe they need them now... whereas I will have to wait until may 2008 :bye2:

i asked this question.. erik was like.. we never tried.. but he couldnt see why sigma lenses wouldnt work... I was asking what the sigma sa mount was.. anyhoo.. sigma should work on canon mount birgers. we should order fries and coke with that.

Won't the Sigmas work with Birgers?

Yes, they will work. But not officially guarenteed. I think that all Sigmas will work in the canon mount (if they are build for that mount) whereas those for nikon, will need a built-in motor "hyper sonic motor" HSM.

There is a very nice 30mm f/1,4 prime. And a new 70-200

and this tokina with the nikon mount?.. will also need this same built-in motor or any other add-on?

Focussing a tokina zoom will not work with the birger nikon mount, since they are in tokinas AF-D equivalent.

However, it is all quite speculative at this point, since nobody knows the number of steps in the tokinas, and noise might also be a propblem. Atleast I have read about the AF being noisy in some reviews.

We will just have to wait it out until somebody gets a hold of the different birgermounts and a shitload of glass.
but that is gonna be a good day, and maybe not so far away...

Here's a review about another Tokina:

The verdict about the Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X DX can't be easy because its quality varies across the different characteristics. In terms of resolution the lens is on a very high level. The center performance is excellent throughout the whole range. The borders are (naturally) quite a bit worse especially at f/4 but very decent from f/5.6 onward. Distortions are comparatively low for an ultra-wide lens and vignetting may only be an issue at 12mm @ f/4. On the downside chromatic aberrations are a significant problem at harsh contrast transitions - at least if you perfer straight JPEGs or plain converted RAWs. The problem can be almost completely avoided by using intelligent RAW converters such as Raw Shooter Essentials or by manual correction via Adobe Camera RAW or similar tools. So whether this characteristic is a problem for you is dependent on your workflow. Beyond CAs the lens doesn't really like contra light. Using the supplied hood is a good idea here and if possible light sources in the image field should be avoided. Typical for all Tokina AT-X lenses the build quality is on a very high level putting many lenses from other manufacturers to shame especially when considering the quite affordable price of about 450 EUR/US$. So if you're a RAW shooter willing to invest a little efforting in CA correction this lens can be highly recommended.

for this particular lens is focus that big of a deal? the longest it goes is 16mm. I would think that if you're anywhere near 5.6 it won't be an issue. In some situations yes, but most of the time on this specific lens I don't think it will matter. this does not preclude the discussion of their other lenses but for this one it's practically a moot point.
