I thought that any of the new Nikon Mount lenses with "in lens" focus motors should work on the RED Nikon Mount ???? I've always loved and owned many versions of the Tokina 11-16 (Sony version, original Nikon version, PL version...) I really like the way the the Nikon 50mm f1.4 G (and others on the accepted RED list) work on the Nikon mount - fast accurate and silent - when im shooting by my self hand held on the run it is great to be able to depress the button and get usable to excellent focus!!! I went out and purchased the new Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX II Digital Zoom Lens (AF-S Motor) in Nikon Mount with the hope it would auto focus!! It DOES NOT. it seem to report some focus information on screen but every possible setting change etc WILL NOT enable auto focus. Is RED is going to "profile" any additional lenes for the Nikon mount - then this should be on the top of the list!!! Can someone tell me what they mean by "PROFILE" a lens??
Does anyone know if the is any way at this time to get this lens to auto focus??

Are you able to change the f-stop?

The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX II Digital Zoom Lens (AF-S Motor) does allow the on screen changing of F stop - it seems accurate across the range with no issues. It also gives a distance read out on screen but it doesnt seem accurate at all times, the initial seems good at startup but other readings are off.
I wonder how many are using the NIKON mount - there has been a total lack of response on this thread??

This lens is in my cart for purchase of a Canon mount version at B&H and I specifically came here to see if there were any up to date lists of compatible lenses. I have a Sigma 17-50mm IS lens that I was hoping would work but doesn't seem to talk to the mount.

Any official lists of acceptable off-brand lenses for both the Canon and Nikon mounts would be amazing.

Roger, This probably doesn't help you but I have been using the Canon version for some time on the Red Canon mount and everything works great... focus and aperture

It seems everyone has the Canon mount. The Nikon is a new comer - does anyone know how many Nikon mounts are out there?? I seems there is not much concern for the Nikon mount users.
The Tokina is such a universally accepted lens - you would think it would be a RED priority!!

Hi Roger,

I had posted yesterday on the Scarlet forum asking a similar question about the Tokina 11-16 lenses on the Nikon Mount. Most of my stills glass is Nikon . As a result I was trying to get info about the original vs the newer II version and their compatibility. From what you are posting it sounds as if neither is functioning at least not right now. I've got both mounts but I plan to shoot mostly Nikon since changing mounts is not very practical in the field so going Canon would not be the best option for me. Would be nice if someone could chime in from RED or better maybe I'll just call my Rep. He's really helpful for this sort of question when specific info is in short supply on the forum. I'll post back if I get any info.

When I first used my Canon Tokina 11-16 with the RED Canon mount, there was no focus distance readout and the AF was less than reliable. I sent a note to RED Support and they responded that my request had been forwarded to the engineers. Improved functions showed up in the next firmware.
So, I would suggest that you contact RED support and make a feature request for your lens/mount setup and see what they say.

+1 on an updated official list of lenses tested with RED mounts, that is way overdue IMHO.

Hi Roger,

My rep said the questions have been submitted to the tech guys and that I should hear back by end of day. I'll post here when I get that reply.

I have a nikkor mount but I don't actually have the lens...

I am however interested in potentially buying it or the older one that is 100 dollars less. Cuz I shoot a lot of overcranked stuff and after the crop in on the sensor I basically need to get wide as possible glass wise. I like that it holds the the f stop and is fairly wide. The widest lens I have been shooting now is a 24-85.

Does anyone know if this Tokina or the older model holds focus during the zoom? I read it supposedly holds the t stop...but couldn't find a source saying if it can hold focus on the zooms or not... Thank you!

Brian,

Quoting from Evin Grant's Salt II tests post in the part 2 section.

"The best example of this is what Duclos have done with the Tokina 11-16mm lens, their re-housing and rebuilding of this lens does a lot more than just add gears and a PL mount. They re-center the optical elements and correct for parfocus optical issues that are "Within tolerance" of a stills lens but not of a lens expected to shoot movies. One specific tweak is to stabilize the rear element group during zooming so the lens tracks perfectly and no shifting occurs. Each lens need to be hand assembled because the tolerances of the stock lens vary so much."

Based on this it sounds like the optics are capable, but the mechanics are off or can vary.

Hi Roger and all,

I received a quick reply to the support question. The delay is my fault due to a deadline job. Here is the reply with regards to the Tokina 11-16 at this stage:

"At this point in time, the list contains Nikkor lenses only. We do not currently offer full support for the Tokina lenses mentioned. However, that does not mean they will not work with the Nikon Mount, only that we have not specifically provided support for them at this time. Some third party lenses seem to function without any issues, while others are either intermittent, or are not recognized by the mount.

Support for the Nikon Mount is ongoing, which means this list is likely to continue to be updated in the future. I will be happy to forward your lens suggestions to our development team as a future support request, but do not have more specific information on when they will be supported."

Here is the current list of supported lenses: http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc-al-nikon-mount
As with most things RED, it will be ready when it is ready, but requests may expedite the matter.

Thanks William:
nothing has changed in BUILD V4.0.8 The Tokina 11-16 still doesnt focus!!! The link: http://www.red.com/store/products/dsmc-al-nikon-mount has not be updated since the mount was released - its still the same 8 lenses- the 50mm F1.4 is an awesome lens for the money ($400) - I am getting the 24-70 next week. i would get the 14-24 but the size and protrusion of the front element really turns me off to the lens - I really use a lens and something that exposed and un-balanced just wont work for me - the Tokina is just a better fit!!! I really dont think an auto focus lens if useful in most circumstances. REAL Cine manual lenes are essential in my kit.
