Today I went to visit with Michael Cioni at his new company, LightIron. He has a very High-End Screening Suite with the Newest Pablo in the World. the Suite has a 4K Pablo attached to a 4K Sony Projector and big 30 x 15 foot screen, with about 20 or 30 very plush leather wide berth seats.

He showed me some footage in 4k and it made me renew my excitement about what we are all doing. If you live in LA, you should go check out this new facility housed inside of Alternative Rentals which is in Culver City right at the corner of Jefferson and National.

Send him a message and go take a tour...

you will thank me later...

Just wanted to second the recommendation to check out what Michael is doing over at LightIron. Those that attended REDucation can confirm that Michael Cioni and his experienced team know what they are doing. Michael is great at explaining it at whatever level you want it at.

It was a pleasure getting to know Michael at Reducation, and I'll happily confirm Steve's assessment. I'm confident that you'd get similar feedback from the entirety of the Reducation Alumni.

Michael was passionate and incredibly knowledgeable, and trust me, we really put him through his paces.

I just wish I lived closer so that I could drop by and see the new facility now instead of waiting until my next trip to LA.

And while we're at it, Steve Freebairn was not only the hardest working guy at Reducation, he's was also a super valuable resource for clarifying DIT work flows, tools, and he provide me with a ton of practical advice.

I'd highly recommend working with either of these gents, and I personally plan to do so in the future.

Forgot to mention, he has the red rocket all setup too...so something else to check out!

Exciting times

Exciting times

I had the good fortune of visiting LightIRON on Sunday and it is a killer setup. Michael was paying attention during his time at Plaster City and has refined the data centric post environment even further at the new shop.

IMHO when the new paradigms are embraced and paired with top talent we will see that it is not just about the organic nature or dynamic range of film that makes it the standard - its just as much about the way film projects are handled. Huh?

First off, modern film stocks are truly amazing and make terrific images. That said, experienced union crews with best in class production design, make up, etc combined with artfully lit scenes and top cinematographers are a huge part of the equation.

Premier post production facilities for film sourced material are experts at managing the imaging pipeline all the way to print. All due respect. That said, facilities like LightIRON are the vanguard of a fully digital alternative that has reached a level of maturity that makes it viable versus film. As proof, I offer the fact that a number of features in the last year or two have seamlessly combined 35mm negative sourced imagery with digitally captured imagery.

Like I said, exciting times.
