  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Today at RED ...

Oh no-ooo! I am OUT of funds - well at least these babies should be hireable cheaper! :-)

But when? And how much? :umm:

Is it completely ludicrous to wish for a rental as early as the end of 2009, at a rate equal to Super Speeds, or Standard Speeds. Alone?

My guess would be yes, as in no way... like Tim said. You would probably still have to rent a Red package from one of the few holders of the few sets out by then. But if Red can get say 300 sets out by then... even 200... then things might be very different. And it sounds like their production would be at least equal, if not a bit faster than the 18-85. I mean, they are putting together a big optics division... the more lenses they make the faster they will get at R&D and production.... my own spekillation is culing me.

this is all very exciting. glad to hear such glowing reviews from someone who tells it like it is in Mark.

In order to be 'S4 killers' however, more than just quality is needed. They would need to ship a much wider variety of focal lengths, allowing the top-tier shooters the options they have available when ordering their lenses. Most bigger shoots have about a dozen primes in their package, and until RED PRO Primes offer the same flexibility, they won't kill off the big boys......

Lets see how quickly these will ship...sounds exciting either way and makes me feel a little guilty for buying my used cine primes so soon..

Pricing and Delivery?

The RED Primes are a fresh sheet of paper design. One of the advantages we have in doing this is to "digitally optimize" the program. The results of center to edge sharpness, lack of CA, and transmission uniformity confirm that the designs are pretty incredible. Even better than we had hoped. The mechanical design mirrors the quality we accomplished with the 18-85mm zoom. Everything we make going forward will be of the type of quality.

What would be the indicative pricing and Delivery dates Jim?

How I wish I could hold them… NOW…

This 18mm is a very urgent matter btw, because this set is a bit hard to use without it.

Now the same thing in Anamorphic to go with the FF35, and we're good to go :)

Thanks Mark,

Emmanuel

Pretty soon... :-)

I'm not worried about "when" just "how many"... I cant imagine quality glass is something you pump out in the same volume like camera bodies and camera modules... but alas, good things come to those who wait.

i feel bad for the guys who spent tons of money on glass from the 80s

Well, it's still great glass and LENSES are all about preference and that is very subjective... so some might not care, especially if they are using them and are happy with the results.

If they are renting them, yeah, probably going to be a tough sell soon.

that said, I'm glad I waited... :)

Yah.. mostly talking about renting (getting money back on them)

got it. that makes total sense... been lots of bubbles bursting this decade.

2001 dot com bubble
2008 Housing Bubble
2009 Cine Lens Bubble?

off topic , did you ever have time to post some ZF footage? Stills were great. I love that glass especially for the money. havent seen footage of ZF on a RED yet though, just Ex-1, panny, etc.
