So here is the burning question. Do I pack up my bags and go to LA to give it a shot out there, or do I stay here in NY and continue to freelance until a permanent job comes up. Thinking if I came to LA, I could freelance / intern for a while until a permanent job opened up.. plus there seems to be a lot more RedUsers out in LA so..... well you guys are cool so everybody must be?

Having a few connections in LA before you move there wouldn't hurt. Also, it can be a lifestyle thing. Are you more of an East Coast guy or west coast guy? Or maybe neither, which in that case, maybe it isn't a factor. I had a great opportunity to go to LA and have a nice job at one of the big studios years ago, but decided I was too much of an East Coast guy to pick up and move out there. That decision had a huge impact on my life as I started dating the girl I would eventually marry right after that and that has been amazing. So I have zero regrets. I've become a firm believer that if you want to become successful, and you're willing to work hard (sometimes really hard) then whether it's LA, New York, Chicago, etc. you'll probably be okay. Network with as many people as you can, and seize every opportunity in front of you.

Best of luck!

im going to have to say LA you can find a nice loft in the downtown area for 70 cents - 115 a square foot witch you can also rent out for small productions and photo shoots if need be and half way live off that income. im from LA and a Columbia alumni so im familiar with both. ive never had a problem getting work in LA sometimes overwhelmed with work and offers.... wheeeeeeeeehhh makes me wish i was in LA right now.

I moved to LA from NYC about 12 years ago. I was working as a flame artist on TV commercials in NYC and really wanted to try movies. The best advice I got was that everything you've done anywhere besides LA doesn't really count in LA. You'll be starting over. It was worth it to be because I would have shot myself if I had to do another commercial.
Cheers,
Sam

away from crazy???
I'm so MN

Mos def. Good schools and centrally located to all things LA. Also it's known as the post production ghetto. Tons of post houses most good others of ill-repute.
