  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

To hell with paper!

Just the other day I managed to track down an out-of print book from Australia. When it arrived, the first thing I had to do was smell it. I just *love* the smell of old books. Part of the reading pleasure is the feeling of good paper, the 3-d quality of a well crafted binding, the sound of the pages turning.

How much use is a Kindle on the toilet ;) ?

I think you're on to something here, Andy. Just use cash register receipt paper or, even better: very thin metal coated Estar™ ribbon 2 - 3cm wide, and the writing with microscopic laser-etched marking, and the OCR with a 3200+ dpi scanner/reader and I think you have a viable archival medium. Hmmmm...

Rochester, are you listening? NO? (I thought not.) :(

This would be prohibitively expensive. Once you get into the microscopic level, dust dings and dents come into play.

And to save on paper/ribbon just enter it into Word and put that on a thumb drive...oh wait..:emote_headwall:

I love 'the ninth gate' just because it's about old books. Paper is here to stay for as long as we have it.

Delivery media has nothing to do with content.

We associate established authors with paper because that is how we got their work until "now", and publishers won't ignore that until the distinction becomes meaningless for their goals. But it will come a day when kids will find it ridiculous and impractical to buy their comic books in printed form... That may sound beyond weird, but it will happen.

Maybe mature quantum cryptography practices will be the turning point. If you can provide the necessary trust for collectors to buy digital...

Of course, to be completely over paper we will also need some sort of --gorgeous-- foldable screens, or super bright (and dimmable) projectors that fit in a necklace... something that erases the line at least.

But in the end if I were to write crap it will still be spelled like C-R-A-P on whatever you use to deliver them letters.
