  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

To continue to use Red cameras proxies or not to?

I'm in a bit of a pickle.
To explain:
I'm a first time user of RED and FCP.
We shot in 4k 2:1
I started editing by making separate sequences for each scene.
I then dropped in the Red cameras lowest res QT 'P files' into each sequences bin and edited away happily (Yes, I was rendering every shot, time line move and transition......) until I came to join the separate scene sequences and realised I had managed to set the sequences differently.
Doh... that is corrected now, I believe, with one scene not liking it...so I'm planning to re-edit that scene in the correct final sequence.

I now realise I should have imported all the takes via 'log and transfer' as Prores422.
:mad2:
I have completed this Log and transfer now.
I tried going offline with the original cameras quick time files and reconnecting the media to the new correctly imported prores422 files but it could not see them even when I located them.

I now have all the scenes in one sequence, except for one (which I could not get in) which I am going to restart editing on by dropping into the timeline the new proress422 shots.

Can I do this using the new prores imports and still be able to render at a later stage with full res 4k?
Or am I best carrying on with the cameras low res camera QT files?
I realise editing with the low res camera made QT files is bad news...I had been using a shot that was out of focus and I had not originally noticed due to the poor quality....

I am keen to render 4k as I have cropped a few shots and presume that I will need the full resolution images to start from to get good resolution from the cropped images.
The film is intended for cinema projection at festivals.

Any guidance and untangling appreciated!

Cheers...

Around here we tend to output 720p full debayer via RED Rocket™ for our offline material. The use of the in camera proxies never really worked out how it was initially intended, and the low quality leaves something to be desired. Even without a RED Rocket™ card, you can output via Red Rushes or RedCine-X self contained 1/4 res quicktimes. These quicktimes will give you much better quality than the in camera proxies, and allow a very fluid editing experience. As long as you keep the file names of the Red footage as they were originally named, there are many methods for re-conecting to the .r3d source.

With regards to the in camera proxies, these days we disable the camera from creating them all together since the image you see in the proxy quicktime is usually off with regards to camera color meta data.

I have used my laptop in the past to output 1/4 res rushes for an offline with great success, and they don't take that long to output either.

good luck on your project

Cheers Colin... I guess so long as I can reconnect back to the .r3d source I've not lost anything other than time.

Yeah, it kinda sucks, but you shouldn't lose anything more than time. I did something similar during my first RED project and managed to totally screw up my media connections. Eventually ended up going back through and reconnecting everything by hand. Was only a 15 minute piece, so it wasn't *too* bad.

Since then, my first piece of advice is this: Test your workflow. Whatever you're going to do in post, run a test on it before you start. Grab 3 or 4 clips, cut them up, and run them through the pipeline, looking for snags.

Try Clipfinder, it's amazing.

Red Rocket makes things easier for sure.
Although, since you have already done all that work... try with Crimson or Monkey. At this point it will save you some time

One more question...if I am using the camera produced proxies AND the prores422 proxies in the same sequence am I asking for trouble when it come to exporting? So far all seems fine... I've done a simple quicktime export which works, but wondering when it comes to a 4k render?
(looking forward to the day when I can help other people on this forum!)
