  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

To be the Jackass

Guys,

This is going to be an old out of date arguement in a few weeks.

Feel free to keep discussing it if you wish, but the wheels are already in motion.. We're heading for the promised land at full speed and the brakes are out!

It's payback for Panny's PC-centric P2 debacle. THAT was fun for a cam system aimed at the FCP crowd...

(This is my favourite thread title now, and I shall adopt it as my life philosophy)

I second the notion that Macs and PCs are just tools.

I use mac at home, but that doesn't mean that PC's aren't a better (or the only) choice for other things.

Horses for courses.

Exactly, and speaking of horses...

I'm staying out of this debate. But...
will Vista be supported? (32 or better yet 64).

There was no interest from any PC platform companies to work with "the scam" when we got started. Apple embraced us from day one. So you tell me which comes 1st. Having said that, we are frantically working on the SDK to solve the PC issue. No matter what we do, there will be those that have something to complain about (most are legitimate). All we can do is do our best to keep knocking down issues.

With all respect, Jim,

I wonder how we should think about Assimilate now, after this comment.
Or have they been payed for doing RED CINE?
They are a PC platform company AFAIK...

Anyhow,

my hope is that at a not-to-late point in the development schedule the platforms (Apple, Windows, Linux, whatever) will be lined up by a common core logic that is more or less universal from then on. I know its hard to get there, but once your done with the individual OS framework, releasing new core versions "multi platform" becomes much easier.

I really wonder why poeple start a PC vs. Mac "discussion" here at all. Its just tools, just TOOOOOLs!

The valid point about supporting something beside Mac is:

There are many many Indy users that have their investments made into PC systems, including software packages. Forcing them to swap out for a Mac just earns Apple money, wastes potentially customers money or interest (as the total RED product package may then become to unattractive for their personal budget). So every PC user not requiring to buy an Apple will

a) spend potentially saved money potentially on further RED products

and / or

b) will at least be happy about RED for being budget friendly and do free advertising for RED (as usual)

I do understand that many PC users are eagerly waiting for the new versions and the QT codec.
Hey, how long do we wait for DVC PRO 50, DVC PRO HD and ProRes 422 codecs for PC?
I guess Apple will NEVER deliver them (as DVC PRO 50/HD was their ONLY successful reason to re-enter the media market, after being the "print & ad" only hardware).
That is why cross platform codecs become so critical.

Looking forward to working PC support too, as our Mac's are currently all rented out (ouch!).

Cheers,
Axel

Axel,

I think Jim was referring specifically to editorial companies... ;)

It's fair to say we embraced RED from the first time we were contacted.

Lucas,

I have nothing else expected...

Its just that Jim's comment reads a bit too weighted for my taste in this case, for whatever reason.

We all need RED to support many platforms, to keep our pipelines going, which are often multi-platform these days.

Cheers,
Axel
