  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm just trying to get a sense of who else out there has S16 lenses on their Red One (or is planning to use S16 lenses on their Red One once they take ownership).

It does seem like most owners are using 35mm lenses, but for those of us shooting 2K the issues surrounding this camera aren't exactly the same.

Among them:

- More noise in the image.
- Not being able to work with greater-than-HD proxies in FCP and, soon, in Color. (Shooting in 4K lets you use 2K proxies; shooting in 2K means you're using less-than-HD-resolution proxies).

On the other hand, we've got the ability to shoot in higher frame rates, which the folks with 35mm lenses don't have at 4K.

Just trying to get a sense of who's out there and what you might have discovered as the best workaround to the 2K issues.

Hi P. Harrill,

I have a Zeiss S16 12-120mm zoom. I'm quite happy with it but must admit I prefer shooting 4K. Concerning your issues :

1 - If you're image is clean (well exposed for 5000k) you shouldn't have more noise than in 4K.

2 - among the proxies made in camera, is a full size proxy, meaning 2K if you're shooting 2K, so you are not limited to smaller proxies.

Cheers,
Damien

Interesting.

1) I'm definitely seeing a lot of noise, even when shooting properly exposed in daylight.

2) I've tried using the full size proxy in FCP. I get a weird green-tinged image that is divided into eight quadrants. (see below) Also, I've yet to try it, but I read that the new Log and Transfer plugin brings things in at 1/2 resolution.

Odd, I haven't noticed anything like your green-tinged images in my 2K proxies from 2K (with either build 13, or second beta 15 or release 15).

As to noise, well there is some, but is it more than in 4K ? Although when downrezing you can probably get rid of more when starting from 4K.

You shuld contact Red support about your green tinged images, that's not normal.

About the FCP log and capture, I sure hope it's not 1/2 res.

Cheers,
Damien

Yeah, no kidding that image isn't normal! I just didn't know other people were having good luck with it and it's only me.

EDIT: Can anyone confirm whether "log and transfer" allows you to work with 1/2 size or full size ProRes?

Just tried "log and transfer" -- it's importing at 1/2 resolution. Dragged the clip to my sequence and the sequence settings are 1024 x 576.
