Hi, I am tired of crap Scarlet-x footage from youtube. Can someone please post their work or some good footage that shows the potential of the Scarlet camera. I only see dark, underexposed video looking amateurish footage on youtube.

Thank you. I am so fed up when friends ask about good Scarlet-x footage and I go to youtube to show them and there is only footage of some guy filming his dog or a barbecue or someone who does not know how to grade. I want to be able to say. "Here look what these guys have shot with this camera. Lets use it on our next project" ... I know that the main thing is who is behind the camera, but to "ordinary" people you want to be able to show something awesome that someone has shot to be able to convince them to use it. I would really appreciate some good examples.

Check on Vimeo, there is some great work on there. Ryan Koo has one that looks great.

Pretty Little Liars and episodes 2, 4, and 5 of HBO's new show Banshee were shot on Scarlet. Conversely, you can point to Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Soderberg's Haywire which were shot on R1mx/Epic, but in both cases used a ~3k crop/extraction (which means they were less resolution than Scarlet.) Haywire was naturally lit, too. Actually so was Contagion and The Informant (and those were on R1mx, meaning the highest compression ratio would have been RC42 ~7.5:1 and 12bit instead of 16bit).

If you're going to point to someone else's footage to justify a camera, you may as well point to the best? Complaining that home videos, test shoots, or no-budget short films look like DSLR footage is like complaining that an old beat-up Ford f150 doesn't go as fast as a Ferrari F430 (the reason it doesn't is obvious and you're foolish to expect otherwise.)

Pointing someone to youtube is where you are failing.

Everyone has seen Social Network (The Facebook movie) Filmed on Red One MX.

Girl with Dragon Tattoo

Book of Eli

all shot on MX and so many more hollywood movies. If you want to show someone what this sensor is possible of then tell them to go watch hollywood movie.

I typically recommend whatever the biggest newest Red film is: Hobbit, Gatsby, Prometheus, Resident Evil, Spiderman... When you list them like that, and many of the major blockbusters were on the MX sensor, can't hurt...

You can give a great musician a crap guitar, and he will be able to play it better than a crap musician with a great guitar. The camera is no different.

^ awesome.

Also, definitely check out the Scarlet Group on Vimeo.

Robert, I would recommend filming something on the Scarlet and then sharing it with the world. That way you don't leave it in the hands of others and instead take the bull by the horns and show it's true potential. Or follow the advice of others and point to some of the successful projects that have used the Scarlet with skilled people behind the camera. Neither Youtube or Vimeo are the best showcases for any camera in my opinion if in fact you are trying to discuss things such as resolution, noise, things of that nature. Too many variables come into play with compression for the web.

Hey guys, you have shot some amazing things. Thanks for the links. I will definitely rent the Scarlet for my next project.

Red One looks better than Scarlet or EPIC in my opinion. Many people in these forums who shoot or own both cameras share the same opinion.

Those were shot with EPIC which is different camera and produces better image.

Hm... I would say my impression is that there aren't many agreeing fully on either of those statements after testing for it,
but I agree... these questions have been asked a number of times...

That does not lead to concencus....

It's a bit like the history of one politician in the 60's saying something in the line of:

I hereby declare that I never have implied that Candidate (whatever) have an unhealthy interest in animals.

Guess what people were looking for after that... :)

I think that scenario is what is referred to as a 'witch hunt'...

Personally, I think the only reason the "R1's look" came into question was because people were processing its footage differently -- e.g. RedColour/RedGamma1 and 2, instead of RC3/RG3 (which tends to stretch the image out more.) Actually, Gunleik it was your Alexa vs MX testing that lead me to that theory -- all of your test files were RG1 and were definitely perceptibly "cleaner" than RG3 (although they clip about 1/2 a stop sooner).@Josh: On the flip side, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was actually closer to 3k (3600x1500) than 4.5k after cropping (10% centre extraction) and the R1mx is 12bit and has a max of 7.5:1 compression ratio (whereas Scarlet is 16bit and has 6:1): as seen here.

Conversely, Soderberg's Haywire was actually less resolution than that on R1mx because it was shot anamorphically and was cropped fairly heavily. And, again, a lot of Soderberg's R1 features were shot naturally/practically lit, so if your results are worse than that, it's not the camera's fault.
