  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tip...

We'll be updating the Operators Guide to clarify this.

Thanks alredy for this clarification.

How about Adams' point that when the red light of barber pole is on, 2% of the pixels clip? Often in raw view all the lights of the barber pole are on, but still none of the trafic lights is on. Neither one see zebras (or are they so small one can't just see them?) although all lights in the barber pole are on.

Jim said at some point that the zebras are most reliable sign of clipping. When exposuring to the right, which meter is the reliable one, barber pole, trafic lights or the zebras?

Great to hear that Adam's article is correct - this turns the barber pole (love the name he found) into a highly useful tool. Since you cannot have both raw display and edge highlighting at the same time, this might be the closest we can get to that.

But I am confused; since the barber pole does indeed show RAW readings regardless of viewing mode, then why is the same not possible for the False Color display (as stated by RED)?

since the barber pole does indeed show RAW readings regardless of viewing mode, then why is the same not possible for the False Color display ?

Only because the False Color Display is derived from the camera's monitor path,

and that follows the VIEW selection... i.e. RAW or REC709 or REDspace.

Thanks, Stuart.

Looking forward to the updated op. manual. (Not that you RED people lack anything to do, but it might be a cool idea to have a video explaining how to use the various monitoring tools that our beloved RED ones offer. This might be a very good first-stop for all those DPs that are now getting their first job on a RED.)

Barber pole is always accurate.

The other two are showing you clip in the RGB domain - which is very helpful for HD-SDI outputs of course;

but if you want to know precisely what's happening at the sensor level, select VIEW =RAW and all three plus the color overlay indicate that data.

The advantage of color overlay and zebras are they show you WHERE the clip occurs, the advantage of the "barber pole" is it's showing you the sensor data at all time.
