  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Timelapse Part 10 - Illuminate the Heavens

phenomenal. stunning. your milky way shots are some of the best I've seen.

does the dynamic perception hold the weight of the EPIC?

The Dynamic Perception rig will hold the weight of the Epic. The pan and tilt head that I use might have some problems with it. But I think with some Canon glass on there it would be doable even with that head I was using. Need to do some tests once I get my Canon mount. Of course Epic needs to get a timelapse mode before any real tests can be done.

Excellent work, Andrew. I am currently trying to decide which rail system I will be buying at the first of the year. I, too, will be using an equatorial mount, in my case a Celestron, but I want to make sure whatever rail system I do decide to use will support it all. Since I doubt I would be using he Epic very much on the mount, I have been leaning towards the Dynamic Perception. Have you had any problems with your DP system in regards to it operating when fully equipped?

This timelapse video was shot using the Dynamic Perception motion control rig. Pan and Tilt moves were done using a telescope head being controlled by the MX2 controller. Lenses that were used in the video are: Canon 14mm 2.8L mk ll, Canon 24mm 1.4L mk ll, Sigma 15mm 2.8, Zeiss 28mm 2 ZF, Zeiss 35mm 2 ZF, Zeiss 50mm 1.4 ZF. The camera used for all the timelapse shots was the Canon 5D Mark 2.

The slow motion shot was done using the Epic X shooting at 240fps in 2K using the RED Zoom 18-50mm 2.8.

Wow man! That is amazing!

The two biggest problems that I have had with the DP rig are that the speeds it says in the MX2 controller aren't right. So you have to have a tape measure with you and a stop watch to make sure its going the right speed. I also use to have problems with the pan/tilt head not moving during a shot. But it seems that problem has been fixed with the new interface cable DP came out with for the pan/tilt head. The motor is very strong that comes with the kit. You can always make is capable of handling more weight by changing the motor. I want to try it with my Epic once it gets some timelapse settings in it.

The DP will hold the Epic without a problem. I own a DP and I use it all the time with my red, and as soon the long exposure is enabled I will be using it with my Epic.

The DP rig is pretty robust. Biggest thing I would worry about is flex in the track from the weight. On that 6' rig it's not so bad. But on my 10' rig I have to support the middle.

wow, did not know the motor on the d|p could handle a red camera, that's awesome.

I always thought the DP rig was strong enough for the RED One. Still, its right at the eight limit. Plus I don't think you could do any vertical moves with it. Epic on the other hand should have no problems, just as long as it isn't weighted down with heavy glass or other accessories.

It's amazing what you can reveal about the world just by speeding it up and slowing it down. :-) And who doesn't love skies and cities at night?

EDIT: Perhaps, if you wanted some nice music ::cough, splutter:: you could do a Kubrick and have a waltz or something as your soundtrack? If you want electronic, you could try Day Off by Sense (I love that piece, it's dreamy yet fast paced).

Thanks Karim, yeah timelapse does show a side of the world most never see. That's what I like about it...an unseen world.

As for the music, I'm a sucker for film scores and I love music that sets a mood and takes you on a journey. Haven't really found that with electronic...yet. The next timelapse I post I'm going to look into a team up with a composer and see what comes of that. I usually let the music kind of dictate the edit of the timelapse, to a certain degree.

You are right. No vertical moves.... I always keep it at 45 maximum.

I kind of figured. The DP rig is robust...but it does have its limits. Vertical moves will be no problem with Epic. Just as long as you keep the camera small.

Made this timelapse into a DCP and hopefully I'll get to see it today over at Warner Bros. today.
