Time Remapping and Apple Color

Hey all!

This is my second Red project. First project I did through FCP, L&T working with raw and not transcoded to ProRes, then grading in Color and all went fine. I did the same with this project but am now facing serious problems.

Now I do a music video with a lot of speed ramping. I just sent it to Color and did all my grading. With all the time remapped cuts, Color renders the entire clip (I had no idea this was going to happen, and then after research I saw that time remapping and Color don't play well together). Not only does it render the entire clip, but about half-way through the rendering errors and the rest of the clip is just 2 frames playing over and over. I was hoping and praying after an all-night render that even though the entire clip was rendered, I'd be able to send it back to FCP and the proper points of the clips would be time remapped, but the ins and outs are completely wrong. I haven't gone back into FCP since I'm away from my project at another job (and I'm only posting this because I'm facing a deadline and need a quick solution), but is it possible that Color interpreted the in and out points of the clip wrong when sending back to FCP, and if I find those correct ins and outs of the entire clip that Color rendered, will that be fine and work (obviously I know I should try this before I ask this question, but I can't at the moment)? Or did the time remapping and sending back and forth completely screw up my clips? If not, read on...

What would be the best way to resolve this? The only solution I've found thus far (since it's already edited and I didn't know that I would face this problem), is to render out all the raw time remapped clips in Red Rushes, find the in and out points of the clips in my original timeline, go to a new timeline and insert the new ProRes clips with all the accurate speed changes and in and out points, then render that out of FCP, then put them back into FCP and send it to Color. This is a lot of roundabout work that I'd like to avoid, and I'd also love to not have to go to ProRes first with these clips as I'd much more prefer to grade in raw.

I've heard some people point to a solution as to using Clip Finder, but I don't know what to do with that information. Any help would be much appreciated!

And a side note: one of my non-time remapped 120fps clips from the end of the timeline (the only clip that this happened to) ended up rendering the wrong in and out points of the clip, and this is the only clip that this happened to. What the heck is that all about?

I also have a copy of the new FCP and Color 1.5 but haven't installed it because I wanted to wait till I was done with this project to avoid any workflow issues from upgrading the software. Did Apple fix these issues with the new version of Color, and would upgrading and just reopening the Color project in Color 1.5 and re-rendering maybe avoid any hassle altogether?

I don't know if your problem is a loop bug due to files that are spread in various R3D files because of 2GB limits...? Clipfinder can help you to fix a color project that has this looping bug.

Open Clipfinder
Choose "fix looping bug in color project" in tools
Choose the color project file.
That's it.

Color 1,5 gives you the ability to work in Full debayer 4k.

I always use Prores files to edit (in L&T or in Clipfinder) and do a reconfrom to R3D for CC.

PS: not sure how timeremapping is handled in Color 1.5... But:

Stage 3 — Grade Your Program Using Color
1. Prepare the sequence for sending to Color. Clips with effects or using media that is
incompatible with Color (including clips with speed effects, still images, freeze
frames, and multicam clips) should be prerendered as described in the “Moving
Projects Between Final Cut Pro and Color” chapter of the Color User Manual. Export
each clip that needs to be prerendered as either ProRes 422 (HQ) or Uncompressed
10-bit 4:2:2, and edit the resulting .mov file into your Timeline to replace the original,
unsupported clip.

Thank you so much Pat! Sounds like I'm going to have to do a lot of work-around. For some reason FCP has never ingested my Red footage right (I shoot at 100 ISO and it imports at 320 ISO and the gamma is off, too), so I'm going to have to render everything as ProRes in Red Rushes first then find all the in and out points like I said before. It shouldn't be too difficult, just really time consuming and a lot of detail I need to pay attention to.

No Bruce you have to install Color 1.5 and the new FCP. It fixes this bug. Also you should use Daun's ColorFixer.
