  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Time of Release

The HVX 200a is on top of the list at its price range. The Canon HV30 at the lower end. Scarlet is a year away maybe more, who knows. A lot of shooting and money can be made 'till then. By the time Scarlet comes out Panasonic will surely have an answer for it. Don't think for a moment this guys are standing still until Scarlet is out. They are already working in more advanced technology to keep competitive.

There are plenty of cameras that can't really compete with Red One, still they make them and sell them for a shitload more then Red One, so I don't really think that Panasonic will understand this before Scarlet does an overkill on the market.

Remember that even if they come up with greater technology, Scarlet is still $3000. That is the thing that makes Red what it is, the price.

So does anyone have any other cameras suggestions or cameras they are selling currently?

There are no other prosumer cameras that can compete because Scarlet is as said a RAW tool. That is a major difference.

Only thing I can really think of is the Andromeda for the DVX100 or the Hydra for the HVX200, but I don't know if those are still avalible.
It's a modification of the DVX100 that take uncompressed material from the sensor at 4:4:4 960p with higher dynamic range.
When you see material from that modification you have to wonder what the hell panasonic is thinking when doing the software and code that compress it to tape.
They could have made a camera that records uncompressed and then just downscale to DV resolution. I never get my head around why the quality is so bad compared to the uncompressed material the DVX100 could generate.

Is this $3,000.00 set in gold or just a perliminary estimate?

If they do a major improvement, let's say interchangable lenses, it will most certainly increase, but I think they will stick with what they presented and their statement is "under $3000" (which means it could be $2800, but I think it's $3000 blank)

or maybe it's "$3000 shipping included"... no matter the destination? That would make the camera itself "under" and at the same time $3000...:)

That would make my day... would buy two of them in that case.
Shit, how wonderful it would be to make movies with two cameras...
No more trying to mix together performances, just have it synced directly and with more setups under the same amount of time.

Gold

Yeah and the great thing about two camera shooting is that even if the "B" camera is locked down, it gives somebody(s) camera operating time. Lots if not most DP's, Operators and AC's have spent time in B and C camera land.

You do realize that "Scarlet" is for a niche market inside of a niche market, right?

And LOL @ People thinking that "Early 2009" is an actual release date. Try Early 2010. Call me pessimistic, but I did say the lot of you were going to cry when you found out that Scarlet wasn't what you wanted it to be.

Tsk. Fixed Lens.

Well, reality is, Panasonic makes cameras that are considered tops in the business for a long time. The new Varicam just came out with a ton of improvements. The DVX was revolutionary, the HVX was revolutionary and I am 100 percent sure they have a few tricks up their sleeve for their future cameras.
As for the $3K price tag on the Scarlet don’t be surprised it might be a different one in a year. The way the economy, manufacturing costs, labor costs and fuel are going may change a lot of prices around. As far as working with RAW files there is still a long way to go before we see the perfect results. Red is still working on it and especially its workflow.
We have to be realistic and understand that Scarlet isn’t even real yet. A few weeks ago we saw a mock-up with a great promise of what it might be. When the first ones start rolling out of the factory we will see how it is going to be for real.

And Kholi, I am with you.. You got to go on the pessimistic side with this kind of project. Hopefully we’ll be wrong but…
I understand you finally settled on the HVX 200A, did you?
