  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Time Lapse? Is it coming?

+1

Totally agree. The total blend of motion and still camera hasn't QUITE happened yet. Super long exposures would be great.

I wish Red had a kickstarter system for feature requests.

Chip a few dollars into the bucket and vote with my wallet to show Red what needs to be a priority.

We wish we had that too... :)

But even without the kickstarter project, time-lapse is on the radar for upcoming features.

Time-lapse is cool, but can be done with an external intervalometer if needed. Pre-roll would be much appreciated. But why aren't long exposures in there already? That was a complete 'what? duh?' moment for me when I realized I couldn't set 1/4 or 8s or whatever on my EPIC. It seems trivial, but there must be a reason it isn't there already... what is it? Issues with non-linear response and calibrating the sensor for longer exposures?

Pre-record will be coming at the same time as time-lapse along with a few other goodies people have been asking for.

As far as longer exposure go, we're still working on it. In order to make the longer exposures useful you do need to calibrate the camera when using them. Remember, R1 is limited to 1s max as well. If anything longer than 1s is doable and usable it will make it into a build eventually.

Good to hear. By the way: Do you still have the audio playback on the list? That's a real lack at the moment.

Thomas.

Thomas.

Audio playback via brain audio, hd-sdi, hdmi and pro-io is coming in 3.3.x which will be released as beta once it goes through a little more testing internally.

I hope it is doable!

Please bring single frame/timelapse and longer exposure to EPIC and Scarlet as soon as possible!

I work mainly in animation and my RED One is regularly used in locked off and motion control scenarios where live action and animation are mixed.

I am frequently asked when EPIC will have its stills function enabled - If you could start with implementing R1s single frame capabilities, adding longer exposure times in later builds

This is dearly needed now

Cheers

Mike

I don't want to sound pessimistic but by reading again the quote below, I don't like the use of "if" and "eventually"
I can't read any promises on the futur of the longer exposure time in tha Epic
Cross my fingers and hope the red team will find a trick to do it.

Thanks for the informative responses on this thread, seems like you have some goodies in the pipeline!

Long exposures... perhaps you could enlighten me in your copious free time :-) - any CMOS sensor DSLR runs exposures from 1/8000 to 30s out of the box, no issues of 'calibration'. What is RDC doing that's different, that this isn't something you can just turn on? "doable and usable" - Seems I was barking up the right tree, I guess you have to calibrate the sensor and characterize its response curve and noise behaviour at longer exposures before you can get usable results or something along those lines? But... isn't it ALL raw, what comes off the sensor is exactly what we get, it's not like you have to tune jpg processing or something...

If so, couldn't you just turn multi-second exposures on right now, with a huge caveat that it's not calibrated yet, results might suck somewhat, and may need a lot of work in post? There have been a couple of times the EPIC was the only camera I had with me and I simply couldn't get what I needed due to this; I would 1000% prefer to be able to shoot long exposures badly, now, than not to be able to shoot them at all for the foreseeable future.

Hi Matthew,

Can you or anyone else give us an estimate as to how far off this is?

We have been waiting and asking for a long time now, with the only response being yours, quoted here.

Do other CMOS sensors run at our speeds and frame-rates? We can't lump DSLR's and EPIC/Scarlet into the same category. They are completely different animals.

Everything is REDcode RAW, imagine setting a 1 fps exposure now and recording without properly calibrating the camera. The results are not very good.

Image quality is everything. We can't compromise there.

I didn't mean to dampen hopes with my previous post. We are exploring ways of making this work for you guys. Unfortunately, it's not a switch we can flip to make it happen overnight.

There are a couple of firmware builds coming out shortly. We have another 3.2 to roll out with some bug-fixes along with our next 3.3 beta build. Time-lapse etc will follow both of these.
