Don´t find a thread where this might have been discussed earlier.

While waiting for my Red to arrive I am trying to get some workflow ready to be used on set. Using an iMac 2.4 dualcore I guess this is comparable to an Apple iBook PRO. When I convert 4k res. R3D files to HD 1080p it takes quite a while to have the Quicktimes ready to watch. With Red Alert the conversion is faster, but I believe the output is only 8bit. So I would at least have a look at the footage say as some sort of onelight dailies to feel comfortable. I find something like 2-3 minutes pretty slow for a conversion of 3 seconds of 4k footage to HD. Maybe there is another fster way and I am just making a mistake. Here is what I do:
I use red Cine to open Red 4k files. I look through footage, and correct whatever I find. Then mark in and out, set the output path and press go. As I said almost a minute per second footage. Could someone enlighten me if I may possibly do something wrong.

Thanks

For viewing on set, just use the camera created proxies. Altering parameters and re-making in RedAlert is practically instantaneous. Your viewing monitor is 8bit and the Quicktime player decode of the movie is 8bit, but the data is still 12bit under the scenes and other apps can access that as float for full precision.
