  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tiffen Variable ND vs. Heliopan Variable ND

I use the IR filter all the time - no mater how strong the ND is.
Can't see any difference in color tint.

Just because you want a dark movie, that doesn't mean you have to shoot it THAT dark.
Look at some behind-the-scenes clips, most of it is done in post. You don't want any extra noise.

So In case of Tiffen Indie kit, would you go with the IRND route, or the ND route with IR filter?

I even thought of buying the Tiffen Indie ND kit (0.3-1.2) and a Genus Eclipse. Thus I could use the Tiffens for lower ND values to cut down light for example indoors, and in case of higher NDs needed then I could use the Genus Eclipse....

I want to shoot as much as I can in-camera, because this project is a HDSLR one with a limited color space and dynamic range.... I don't want a sterile picture, so some noise is welcomed, but later I'd like to apply some grain plugin for this purpose anyway. I have simple lights, and some practicals, so controlling exposure is only by Nds and maybe iso....

I read some stuff on Shane Hurlbut's blog about these Tiffens...

He says that with dslr you don't need an IR until 1.2 (in case of Canon 5D and 7D, but I think it's applicable to other dslrs in this category as well). In the Blackmagic Cinema Camera tests he says that he would go with a 0.3-1.2 ND kit and if needed then he would stack 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 or 1.2 IRND filters on them.

What you guys think about it, stacking ND filters? For example to put on a 1.2 ND and stack a 0.3 IRND on it....... or the opposite: to put on a 1.5 IRND and stack a 0.3 ND on it. Or IR has to be the top filter all the time?

We are using Formatt Hot Mirror always outer most filter and then appropriate ND next filter in. We arnt using IRND's but many people are with out problems.

I just ordered the Tiffen HV Indie Kit with the water white ND filters from 0.3 to 1.2.

In terms of IR question... Maybe I will get either a Tiffen T1 or IRND 0.3 filter to stack upon the NDs.

Thanks for all of your help!

The Stills guys are telling me the Singh-Ray Variable ND has leas colour shift. Its not a recomendation as I dont have one to test, Id be interested in feedback on this.
