Have any of you tested the Tiffen T1 with Epic or Scarlet?

My reading seems to indicate that the Schnieder Tru-Cut or newer Platinum IR filters are preferred for the MX sensor, but I also undersand that it is prefferable to stack IR and ND from a single manufacturer. I already have a set of Tiffen ND's and am considering their T1 filter, but can find no test images or other info on how well they work on Epic or Scarlet. I intend to rent them if I can for my own tests, but do any of you have related data or experience that you might share?

Thanks

I have a T1 IR that I got when I was using the EX1. I stacked it with my cheapo Redrock ND filter on my Scarlet while I was waiting for my Schneider IRNDs and it worked well. It's very green so you just have to adjust for that in camera or in post, but it worked great... I didn't do any super-technical tests or anything but couldn't find anything wrong with the footage I test-shot with it. If you're interested, I'll be happy to sell it to you as I now have Schneider Platinum IRND filters. My T1-IR is 4x5.65 and virtually new. Message me if you're interested.

Thank you Trevor.

Have you mixed IR and ND filters from different manufacturers? CONS? I'm expecting additional color casts, yes?

The T1 filter is great but not ideal for the RED cameras. Every manufacturer is a little different and sometimes different model cameras are a little different in their filtration needs as well. The RED cameras definitely benefit from the extended range of the Schneider Platinum series as well as Tiffen's complete combination filters the IRNDHM (INfrared Neutral Density Mot Mirror). Say that last one three times fast. It's actually a bit of a misnomer as the Infrared part is really their T1 formulation, which is technically Far Red, not Infrared.

So long story short, best filters for RED are Schneider Platinum series and Tiffen IRNDHM series.

Thanks a lot Mitch.

Are the Platinums just a combination True-Cut and differ are they significantly different?

I didn't see a 4x4 True Cut on your site and they appear to be back ordered elsewhere. Do you happen to have one in stock?

What would be your advise re: stacking a True-Cut with Tiffen NDs? Would you instead recommend a Tiffen Hot Mirror? Again, I can't afford to replace all of my NDs right now so I am looking for IR only as opposed to combination filters. Otherwise I would step up to Panavision size. ;-)

I'm new to Red ownership and have only begun research on this, so please pardon my ignorance.
Thanks again

Do you expect the Schneiders to be in stock soon?

I just spoke to the engineer at Schneider who designs their filters and he told me they hope to be out of backorder by Cine Gear Expo time in May.

He also tells me that Platinum IRND grads are on the drawing board, hopefully to be in available this time next year.

I ordered three Platinum IRND filters (.6, .9, 1.2) from Filmtools in January... received the .6 and .9 in mid-March, and they had no estimate on the availability of the 1.2. I did get an email from Niki Mustain with Schneider regarding my order and she said they were working as hard as they can to fulfill orders and backorders should be cleared within approximately 120 days. That was back in the beginning of march. Hang in there, folks! They're coming slowly but surely.

The T1 IR is for the Alexa to correct the Blue Green sensor in Daylight since its a tungsten based camera.

I know that the T1 has been pretty aggressively marketed to Sony EX series operators. I guess it was designed with those cameras specifically in mind. It is good to know that it is also good on Alexa. Thanks Stanley.

It is interesting to learn that the Alexa is tungsten native. I was not aware of that but, isn't Alexa's ALEV III sensor a single CMOS sensor as opposed to three discreet color sensors? Perhaps you mean to say that the T1 corrects the green channel on the Alexa?

The T1 absorbs light in the deep red portion of the spectrum. Are you saying that the Alexa's green channel is most susceptible to IR pollution? That seems counter-intuitive to me. Wouldn't the red channel be most susceptible?

My understanding is that IR filters and deep red filters like the T1 prevent the red channel from clipping by absorbing excess red. If the T1 in combination with the Red OLPF filters out too much red, the result is a green bias on Red cameras.

So it is more correct to say that the T1 corrects a red channel imbalance, rather than saying it corrects the green channel. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
