  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi,

Is there an existing Red mag 1.8" card reader with thunderbolt port?

Has anyone come up with a solution of Daisy chaining the Red station to a thunderbolt device?

I've been using the USB port and I'm beginning to need something a little faster.

Any advice would help a lot. thanks
 
For now, your best bet is the USB3.0 RedMag Reader. It was mentioned, I dunno, 6 or 9 months back that for now Thunderbolt just isn't there in terms of cost of development versus how many would sell. That could very well change over time (and my personal OPINION is that it certainly will) but for now, that's the state of things.
 
Some things worth noting regarding the usb reader
- Speed is enough of the USB controller. The redmag is the limiting speed factor so thunderbolt wouldn't help.
- Thunderbolt would be useful to free up a usb slot.

- use both cables on the red station to be sure that you dont lose power. Be VERY careful with not unplugging the cables while in use, it can destroy your red card.

No, the very first was the LaunchPad:

This was demoed both at RED HQ's and at Ted's house with Dino and the gang present.
I was working with MAXX at that time on the new EVO 4K series of storage specifically designed for RED workflows.
MAXX (and iStorage) went on making and selling the non-battery version of the LaunchPad pictured above...

If you're already backing up around 200 MB/s over USB3 or eSATA, with a Red 1.8 SSD reader, you won't find faster results with a TB device, but it would be nice to have a PCIe Module that would fit into a PCIe slot on a motherboard or in a TB chassis. If you could put the red ssd reader and red rocket or rocket-x into one TB chassis, that would be ideal.

Why do you think I am mentioning the old-generation RR enclosure on the thread about TB-based RED STATION? :reddevil:

You could probably swap out the TB card and board of a Magma or Sonnet TB case to the Maxx Red Raid case, or just order the board and card set from Magma without a case and mount it in the Maxx Red Raid box. It would take a little fabrication work, of course.

But in all reality, by the time you add up all the costs, it would be easier, faster, and cheaper just to build a dedicated PC / Hackintosh rackmount or LAN-case system, to house everything you would need in one easy to carry box, including a rocket or rocket-x and HBA raid controllers (either internal and/or external). You could probably mount the red reader into a 3.5" bay if you're really motivated.
