  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I´m running a Areca RAID through a Thunderbolt connection. I have the older Thunderbolt 1 version. So I have this 30 meters long optical Thunderbolt cable going to the Raid, which is situated in another room because of noise.

The Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4K is EXTREEMELY loud. Louder than a chinese watercooled PC. So I need to place it in that other room too. The Blackmagic Ultrastudio is Thunderbolt2 capable.

As the Raid only uses TB1, would I be totally ok, by connecting first the Ultrastudio to the 30 meter cable, and then daisychaining the Raid to the Ultrastudio?

Would the Bandwith limits of be ok?

Thanx for your attention.

The only bandwidth going to/from your Ultrastudio is going to be the bandwidth of the video information you're sending to your monitor. Assuming you're doing 10-bit, 422 uncompressed, you're going to be using 1.5GBps or approx 187MB/sec.

Thunderbolt 1 is 10Gbps, or 1.25GBps. So if you're using the full bandwidth of the US4k, you're using 187 out of 1250, or roughly 15% of the bandwidth.

Your Areca RAID, assuming it's 8-bay, set to RAID-5, will be using approx 1050/MBps up/down at full speed, putting you right at 98% of available bandwidth.

In other words, you're A-OK.

If you're using the ultra studio for 4k you'll regret it, for HD you're likely fine. I have a similar setup but have been thinking about getting a second optical cable to enable the additional bandwidth.
