Thoughts on the future of Scarlet and its Package...

Just another wrinkle to throw into the conversation: do you think the future DSLR offerings from Canon and Nikon might help keep the cost down on the Scarlet? We don't know what new, greater video functionality they might have; I think it's very safe to assume they'll be getting better. I don't know what RED's position on this is, but I can't imagine that they would want to give the DSLRs a chance to get a bigger piece of the market. I don't want to get into a DSLR vs. RED thing - I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised if the price of the DSLRs keeps a Scarlet package price from going up very far.

I do not think so. DSLRs are aimed towards hobbyists, Scarlet is a professional tool. I do think some potential scarlet buyers will abandon ship and go for the next gen DSLRs, but for professionals...I think scarlet will be a WAY bigger bang for your buck, even with the rumors of the new canon DSLRs having "Raw" video files. I just dont think they have the cinema end in mind. Its like Apple I think, they are gearing more towards consumer-prosumer.

I seriously do not think that RED are taking any DSLR pricing into any of their considerations when it comes to pricing the SCARLET - since they are not trying to compete with the DSLR market. If some people are in doubt whether they want a DSLR or the SCARLET, then they probably don't know what SCARLET is altogether, or which tool is the most appropriate for them. And I don't believe that either Canon nor Nikon has anything close to competing with the SCARLET anytime soon...if even within the next few (or perhaps many) years.

Btw. I'm glad this thread was made (thanks Joseph). I actually thought about creating one very similar a few days back, as I've repeatedly been trying to explain that SCARLET is indeed a state of the art motion picture camera - and it wont come with a prosumer price tag (or will it??). But I'm also glad that Joseph made this thread as I'm not quite sure I myself would have so been so elegant and clear in my expression, haha :D

DSLRs are aimed towards hobbyists

Haha, I know some "hobbyists" that have paid off their mortgage (during a recession!) using DSLRs for very serious video work.

Canon, Lumix and Nikon will all keep improving, maybe even 10bit RAW soon.... but I don't really see it as something RED will concern themselves with (just as I don't think Canon or Nikon will be massively worried about RED). RED are a niche market, competing with ARRI, Sony and a few others for the high end market. They have an amazing high end product in Epic, so don't need to be panicking about the indie crowd too much.

The Scarlet may just about encroach on the pricing of a flagship Nikon... but doesn't have the sensor size that the DSLR customer base craves.... in turn... the next gen DSLRs will, very likely, not have the quality that Scarlet customer base craves. Neither company massively affected.

Me.... I'm happy to use both.... I love the GH2 footage I am currently editing and it will soon be even better with the new hack. For alot of work, the Scarlet-F + GH2 combo will work very well... for other work, i'll rent an Epic.

The initial 5DII video was aimed at professionals such as news photographers... then snowballed... the addition of full manual controls and 24P should hint at where they are targetting, as well as the partnership with techincolor. I don't think a DSLR was targeted at consumers until the T2i arrived.

Anyway, let's end it there.... RED, Canon, Nikon etc... all cool, all pushing boundaries.

I want to buy a Red Camera, like I buy an Apple Computer.

I pick the model I want (say a 15" MBP or an Epic-S)
Then all the options are presented to me, and I can just choose the stock option or pick something better or go for the best.

If all the options are presented in a way that non-experts can order then buying the camera is easy and all you have do do is wait to use it.

Everyone has different needs for their camera package, which makes custom packs very attractive, but it also makes sense for Red to do some research and predict what many people will want (likely a basic ready to shoot package) and make a lot of them and have those pre-packed and ready to ship.

Anyway, let's end it there...

Agreed. Sigh... I didn't mean to start yet another RED vs. DSLR debate.

My point was, from A LOT of what I've experienced firsthand, the video function on DSLRs is being utilized by new filmmakers, on very limited budgets, trying to produce their own independent projects. That seems to me like the crowd Scarlet is aimed at, and it seems like RED would want court all of those new, up-and-coming filmmakers, and keep them from going to Canon or Nikon in the first place. So in that regard, keeping the price 'manageable' - for lack of a better word - seems logical.

Scarlet is a fantastic piece of technology. If the price of a package went over $10,000 - it'd still be worth it. I just think there are other other factors that might keep the price reasonable.

Perhaps not quite the DSLR market... but the likes of the FS-100 and F3 might help keep the cheapest Scarlet/Epic at a certain price?

It didn't take a marketing expert to tie together the fact that roughly the day the F3 price was announced at around $13k.... Mr Jannard said the Epic-S brain would be between $12k-$14k!

I posted a note on the Scarlet thread in Recon about what might be included in the Scarlet package, and Jarred responded in literally seconds that it was still up in the air. RED has floated some incredible prices for Scarlet Fixed and I would not be surprised at all if the price went up due to the end of year increases in cost. Regardless, it's going to be an incredible camera, with better specs than cameras 10 times it's price.

In the spirit of speculation, this is what I would think the package would include:

Scarlet Fixed Brain...................$????
SIDE SSD MODULE ...............$1500
DSMC Side Handle ..................$950
RED Touch LCD 5" ...............$1,600
REDVolt ................................$195
DSMC Travel Charger ..............$125

Then, I'd want to add on:

128GB SSD.........................$1,800
REDmote...............................$750
REDStation............................$250

If all of this was available for $10,000, I'd be very happy!

I was under the impression that the CF module was standard on Scarlet, and the SSD module was standard on Epic. This is what Jared said not too long ago. Has that changed?

ssd is standard on all cameras from this point, inculding R1...

option is for a CF adapter that goes in the ssd slot

Can you cite that, Paul? Just curious. I try to keep up with all of Jannard's and Jarred's posts and must have missed it.

I know that this is true for Epic, but hadn't heard of the CF module being eliminated for Scarlet.

Now I am curious...I really want an EPIC, but I've been planning for SCARLET-F...of all these products that may or may not come with a SCARLET-F package or be required for use, what is compatible with EPIC and what will require new purchases?

Let's see...what I believe is specific to the SCARLET would include the Side SSD Module, and a module adapter if rear modules are wanted in the future. And the fixed lens, obviously ;-)

Interchangeable includes REDStation, REDmote, SSD Media, Side Handle, 5" Touch Screen, REDVolts, Travel Charger....

So for an EPIC, you would need a new Side SSD Module (or go with a rear module instead), Module Adapter, and lenses. I guess a good way to get around the side module purchase would be to get the rear SSD module and use it on SCARLET until you get an EPIC, but no timeline on the Rear SSD Module yet I imagine?

So a SCARLET-F package, no matter the cost or inclusion, on the whole seems to be good prep for a future EPIC. I'm stoked....

BTW, anybody heard anything about the other touch screen LCD? What was it, an 8" screen? Something around there? I remember the small one was scrapped, but I've only heard about the 5" recently.

look through jarred's posts and you will eventually find it.

Paul, I have read all of Jarred's posts. I am asking you to cite it, because there has been very little talk concerning Scarlet. If I missed it, it would have to be a very obscure reference. Watch this video of Jarred and Tonaci Tran and scroll to the 1:00 mark. Unless something has changed, the last I heard was this, "We'll Keep the CF option for Scarlet."

Quoted:

SSD.. with an optional CF to SSD adapter for people that want to still use CF cards. This is just one of the changes to the original posted package.

Thanks Douglas, Kyle and Zac. If CF is still on the table I will go that route and rent SSD as needed
