  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thoughts on After Effects?

I exported to dpx from Redcine and imported to AE7pro no problems. One thing I recommend is getting a decent OpenGL card, since Adobe supports them the way Scratch and Redcine do. Things fly when one has a Quadro FX 4600 to play with.

I think OpenExr will be a better option for the future. I saw recently on a popular AE Plug-in site someone has written an OpenExr plug-in for AE CS3 that fully supports EXR files, including layers.

We actually do conforming in AE for red projects.
Colorista will not work at 4K since it uses GPU and therefore can only work with up to the highest resolution the card can achieve.

Really?

Would you mind briefly explaining your workflow?

Thanks!

Just imagine the day ... when you can work with NATIVE .r3d files in AE.

How fun will THAT be!

damn right...we could have saved several days on a project we are working on right now if we didnt have to work with dpx files. BTW- 2k dpx files in AE is a breeze, its just all the exporting work thats a waste of time....not to mention the waste of valuable space.

I am slightly worried about buying CS3 a few weeks before NAB. They aren't about to drop CS4 are they?

I wouldnt worry about that, upgrades are always modest (and rarely release at NAB, but months later). Might also want to look at Combustion 2008...the program is awesome (despite all the rumors that it is nearing eol). We use it all the time for roto work.

One of the nice things for us is that it is able to work directly in our Discreet Stones, so footage never leaves our Smoke. The roto artists can wiretap to the footage and work in the background while the editor works online with the client. When the roto work is done it appears right back into the Smokes timeline. In the case of CC or keys, the Smoke even has all the handles to readjust as needed. It is a tremendous time saver.

But regardless it is a great competitor and/or additional tool for an AE artist and modestly priced.

2cnd that. How are you conforming in AE? Rendering all the shots manually into DPX's first from RA or Redcine, then conforming?

Also Sean I am wondering what your deliverable is. If it's not 4k I would consider resizing to an HD resolution and finishing that. At least that's what I am doing in smoke and AE for HD and SD deliverables.
