  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thoughts now that the end is in sight!

Its so exciting that the cameras are nearing completion and i figured it would be nice to start a thread for all these topics so there in one location. i just wanted to see what everyones thinking about scarlet vs. epic and epic s, which is best value. Thoughts on pricing and when we may see them released. And what everyone thinks the big surprise will be at NAB!

Personally im hoping for a release date and price, but i think it would be neat if they announced something about the monstro sensor or the ff35.:emote_popcorn:

i apologize i meant that the end of production is in sight for these models. i agree completely with you though, these cameras are groundbreaking and i cant wait to see the films shot on them. Red created a revolution against the idea that major films could only be done by leading professionals in the industry, and i am truly grateful that they are breaking down that barrier and giving everyone a shot at it.

I'm getting excited as well! I'm going to get the fixed Scarlet, mainly because I can't afford the Epic, and I don't want to have to buy a bunch of new lenses.

the french guys keep talking about this depth channel thing... that would be something. there was a company making that, but they sold it to microsoft who implemented it as part of their kinect program... i'd love to have a good Z channel to work with.

for those that don't know what it is, a depth channel is a greyscale image representing distance from the camera. for example, a person in the foreground will appear dark, and the background white (or vise-versa). you can use this to begin building a matte. depending on the quality, this is at least a helpful place to start for stereoscopic 3D work (especially when done in post), just about any visual effects shot (rotoscoping/keying), and you could also do things like make your depth of field more shallow (but please don't ever do that just because you can, that's not going to make it "look like film", it's just going to make the background look blurry).

in any case, i'm excited to see what RED has in store.

Very cool. Personally I like the deepest focus I can get, but for SFX shots this would be incredibly useful.

Production hasn't started yet, at least not on a meaningful scale. It starts at the end of Feb.

My thought: leading professionals in the industry will still make all the major films.
