  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

This Seals the DEAL on scarlet.

Their DSLR footage is completely out of focus and soft, my 5D/7D look nothing like that and their Scarlet footage doesn't look much better than an F700/F3.. So.. yeah not quite sure I agree with you there :(

I may need to do my own testing. But I feel that it would be close. Theres a few shots where you can clearly see the point of focus.

Hmmm...Can't see much difference at 240p)

Jokes aside though, it highly depends on image processing, I've seen tons of RED One/Epic/Scarlet footage that look like 5D because of bad postproduction choices

I recently seen a short film shot on a RED Scarlet with Nikon lenses and I'll be honest, nobody knew it was shot on RED until we were told. Everyone thought is was DSLR. Interesting though a few films later we seen one shot on RED MX with Nikons and everyone clearly knew it was shot on RED. I'm not hitting on the Scarlet, I love the image and the camera and I do think it shouldn't be compared to most DSLR's out there but I find it interesting that the specific film I seen was very DSLR imagish, Yet I've seen stuff on Vimeo that was Shot on Scarlet that clearly wasn't from a DSLR. I imagine it depends on the DP, Grade and possibly the export settings.

Vladimir is right, this comparison isn't really empirically accurate or fair given that the DSLR footage isn't even in focus often times (and even shots that are do not seem to be compressed and uploaded properly). Most of the links on my vimeo are shot on 5D and 7D combos for any that are interested, fwiw.

I wonder if this rental house performed this with the intent of making the DSLR look purposely bad so that reneters would feel obligated to get the Scarlet, lol.

edit: btw, I enjoyed your link, Vladimir.

As I sit here and wait for my scarlet to ship I've had these same thoughts. Its the MX sensor so at 24 fps 4K 6:1 down sampled to 1080p it should look ALOT like RED One MX or Epic, it is my understanding it should be indistinguishable. But most videos posted on Scarlet never live up to it I'm not sure why, my guess is a lot of the times the people using it don't have as much experience then those shooting Epic, a lot of scarlet users use stills glass, but still for some reason the results are never on par. I'm not bashing the camera, I just invested heavily in it, just wondering where this comes from.

Precisely what has made me weary about my BT Scarlet order. I've seen tons of great stuff from One-MX and Epic but Scarlet results have more often than not been quite lackluster and I'm not entirely sure why. I'm sure part of it is poor preparation and execution based on amateur users who want a cool camera.

I think you guys are getting worked up for no good reason.

Even shots of a guy shooting his baby look amazing to me:

You could always sell your Scarlet and buy a GH3 coming out, lol.

Yeah, I can't say I've seen the same poor results. Whenever you're shooting in low lighting I think the differences are going to be more negligible on a computer screen (and I do know many shorts are shot with minimal lighting in interiors so perhaps that's similar to what they've seen), but even on a ipad you can tell the difference on any exterior shot that isn't entirely blown out / under exposed and not color corrected.

I own a Scarlet, D800, GH2, Af100 and I think they are all fantastic. First time videographers do well with DSLRS because the exposure, colour are pretty bang on in AUTO mode. The RED and even the Af100, I find requires a solid understanding of what is required of the sensor. Plus I find newbies in this field really don't take the time to learn lighting. Good lighting will make every camera shine. For me, the REDs roll off and dynamic range, and resolution is not even in the same category as SLR's.

Bob, I'm with you on this one. It's not the scarlet... it's the user. If your footage looks bad, don't blame this camera. I just got off of a Subaru shoot and the client was more than happy with our footage. It was a daytime shoot and we would have had to light double what we actually did to balance out a dslr's lack of dynamic range. We also would have been doing sky replacements in post. Its really no contest. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Canon 1D C will be capable of and if it stands up.
Cheers,
-Ryan

Yeah, I would Not Put it past the Tester to make th DSLR out of Focus, I can Make my DSLR footage look Fantastic.. After All ACT of VALOR is shot on DSLRS, before the Magic of 24p was even available to them... Cameras are Tools, that is It... Even though I now own a RED ONE MX, I am Still going to Use the SHT out of my 7D and C300...
