  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

THIS is whats wrong with the world....

Timur, I have found that my goal of 2013 is to avoid ever reading comments on CNN and on a lot of filmmaking websites. Reduser still has a lot of good people here and worth reading. I have decided in 2013 I am getting back to reading books, making more content, and spending far less time on the internet. On that note, time to get back to editing.

That sounds like a bunch of good choices!

I may need to follow this post. Advice worth listening too.

Post of the year.

Granted, the year just started, but still…

The online generation:

"Honey, are you coming to bed?"
"I can't, this is important."
"What?"
"Someone is wrong on the internet."

+1. Well said, sir!

I think this will also be my belated New Year's Resolution.

Agreed, itʻs discouraging how online comments are quite often toxic and negative. I read a guy today on Engadget describe the quality of the 4K REDRAY as "not much better than 1080i" after looking at a 661KB JPEG taken at ~10 feet from a 4K screen. What can you say to that, "no it actually does look better"?

Thereʻs definitely been a bunch of this on RU lately as well, where unknowns are showing up with nothing but silly comments and then they just duck back in their hole while the thread self-destructs. Commentary shapes opinions, opinions shape the commentary, it goes on and on in a downward spiral.

reading books, making more content, and spending far less time on the internet.

Very good suggestions.

Read the comments.... By Odins Beard! the entitlement complex of this generation literally hurts my brain......

The stupidest thing is that so often the loudest complainers on the internet aren't even customers. How many of the people complaining about the 1D X actually have any intention of buying one, or a 1D C, in the first place? Work hard and buy the camera that's right for you, don't whinge online about cameras you have no intention of buying anyway.

Not the way the camera's like most likely. They may wait for the cheaper cinema one in a 7d body that is rumored. Allow them to do safe hacking, tell them not to do certain things because it is bad too, but if people keep act irresponsibly that is their fault nit Canon. But is the price difference of that maybe few cent or dollers, even if $20-$100 difference heat sink etc, really worth as much as the price difference of the cameras, we don't need extra model anyway.

Now there were written illegal biased extreme, laws to stop people doing with their machines what they like. There are other unbiased laws against the restrictions, np but they are over ridden by biased wealthy self entitlement. I do a lot of kooking at industry levels (not users, but the business culture politics and culture) and the immoral stuff proposed in various industries is shocking. The issue is, they constantly chip away at the coal face to introduce more and more immoral conduct and law. If some people had their way, the equivalent of you being charged each time you use the camera you effectively bought, and for how many people in crew, how big the production, how you use the camera., anything to get an extra dollar and dime out of you would be the sort of thing they would want, and these people whine about people objecting to this. Fortunately, we have had laws to stop these things. If you think it is wrong, look at how they lived 120 years ago, three centuries ago, a thousand years, and any tine before the Christian era, that has modified laws, the same sort of people with similar mentality are around today, being held back by the improvements. So give the correct whiners a break, your life might not be anywhere near as good without them.

A sense of entitlement, is for the rich to demand lots of money for little, because they are self entitled, self centered, selfish, lazy, greedy bastards, is actual "self entitlement". That is why I have supported Red, it looked a bit doubtful when prices went north, but once they paid things off it came south again (the paying off is normally factored over many years, but that's OK, and thanks). Sure it is not as cheap as it could be, but Red has an upmarket focus at a tenth he price, good. Me myself, I'm interested in serving people with high volume low margin businesses, that is the way to be rich, because you offer a big service for little portion of profit off of people for your effort, definitely nit the culture over here. The problem is generally the people don't know what is true value and support these gobbling companies, and with a severe lack on intelligence but self entitlement that anything they say must be right. They generally post very little of substance in extremely short unwise posts, no morality, just whining about people with the morality to stand up and say it should, can be better, or is unjust self entitlement. This site has had more of this since scarlet fixed. Most people that they target as self entitled, are simply people pointing out better ways that have benefited the people who are complaining about them, and other people and for a correct price. If a company wants to be self entitled to the customers money, they should be pre paired to work for it. While, if the people complaining about self entitlement had their way we might still be on 720p cameras $500k 4k cinema cameras, telling us how much we should appreciate paying $10k for a 720p MPEG prosumer camera (really) that is no better than the future sub $500 4k cameras we will soon have. Of course, Red was not like them, and respectfully listened, and that is why we got improvement, and why they deserved our dollar. They should kiss the feet of the whiners that were morally intelligent enough to get THEM these improvements. Of course, this dies not include immoral senseless self centered whiners, pain is the a... that you cant have a sensible discussion with as with the any of the type, including the aforementioned.

The "Lol" term used as a negative is ussually an absolute sign of a moral and intellectual retardation, mark my words. I meet many pathetic pain in the intellectual but people, but you maybe, never, see me use lol is this sense to the many things negative in each discussion.

Luv you all, but luv goes around.

I agree with Wayne. More to the point:

- A few years ago, everyone complained about F900 prices & cheered RED but complained about their execution.

- Now, people are complaining about Canon 1DC prices & cheering Blackmagic but complaining about their execution.

I fail to see the philosophical difference really. Well, except that the people complaining about Canon 1DC prices have lower budgets than the guys who were complaining about F900s back then.

I'm really looking forward to when 4K cell phone cameras come about and all the folks with Blackmagic cameras start complaining about them complaining! The cycle will continue...

Personally, my New Year's resolution is to stop using the frikkin' shift key unnecessarily. RAW is now raw. It's more grammatically correct, more democratic-feeling and gives me less carpal tunnel that way :)

I will follow you.. The first book I am going to read is: "How to hack a camera"

Heh.

I'm old school. I've been enjoying a good debate on the internet since before the Eternal September (Google it). So I'm just too dyed in the wool to take Steve's advice :-)

On the firmware thing... here's a story.

Back in the 1960s, you could buy a standard mainframe printer from IBM - or you could buy a high-speed sprinter; twice the speed at twice the price.

The difference between them? Two pins, one jumper wire - on or off... needless to say damn few standard speed printers ever stayed at standard speed more than a few hours!

Selling a deliberately crippled product to maintain a price differential NEVER works, and always leaves a bad taste when caught out.

Finally got around to watching Side by Side. You know what was cool about that movie? There was a lot of disagreement in terms of film and digital, especially with Chris Nolan and Wally Pfister standing their ground relentlessly, but the takeaway is that everyone they interviewed was passionate about filmmaking and they have been out there doing it. And if there is any lesson we can learn from this is that we owe it to ourselves to stay passionate about the things that really matter. Watching some of those flashbacks to the early days of DV video with cameras like the VX1000 and eventually the DVX100 almost brought tears to the eyes because that really was a fun time in my life, out there trying to make movies on shoestring budgets with cameras that may have been inferior to Hollywood but allowed the freedom to go shoot.

If I was 22 and had a BT RED One, a BMCC, a Scarlet whatever I can't imagine I would have time for the internet because I'd be out there making stuff. As it is, I'm not 22 and I still feel that way. Life changes fast, seize the opportunities. My advice to young filmmakers who really want to tell stories - live life, experience as many things culturally as you can, observe people, go out of the house, go out of your state, go out of your country (if you can). Get in your car, visit towns you've never driven through before, introduce yourself to a random person every once in a while, speak to people while you wait for a bus, get involved in your town or city. Scorsese makes a comment in Side by Side about going back to the well. Maybe this is what he's talking about. No doubt, the internet is part of our culture now, it's creating it's own social environment and it's brought a lot of people closer than it ever has been possible. As long as we don't forget there's still a great big world outside and there's still real people behind that avatar, so when you engage someone in a forum, try to keep the human side of things intact.

Whilst this is true some of the most absurd and fantastical comments have been made by users who have many posts and this has been left unchecked too which can be just as damaging.

Forgive my English. Bad jokes aside. I agree. In my teenage daughters mind, Internet is only Facebook and Twitter, and one of my friends call it "In-porn-net". Me instead, I think I am becoming a color scientist already just by google things. And I know about a guy who wrote more than three thousand years ago in a book that you probably know well: "My people perish for the lack of knowledge", so he got it right then.. And by the way.. the only reason why we know, that a camera is crippled, is because "The Internet"!!.
