  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

This is something everyone should do ( Lenses )

That was quite a gift, thanks. Love it.

This should be "sticky" in the lens forum.

IMO

The RPZ 18-85 has to be one of the most underrated lens. I love mine. It's hard to believe how cheap they sell for.

The Cookes and Angenieux stand out for me. The Mini S4i are incredible value for money. The Short Angie zoom has so much character backed up with superb optical performance.

Hey man,

all I can say is Leica R and vintage nikon glass. Taking dragon to another level... :)

oh shit, I am a glass geek.

Couldn't agree more!

Back in November we shot our SyFy feature film almost entirely with my Red One MX & Cooke 18-100. The character is simply fantastic. Looks so much like film and just epic all around ;)

I really enjoy this little test that Daufenbach Camera and Explore Media put together with Jeremy Pinckert and Jamieson Mul.

It is not about technical details.. not a bunch of charts, not about MTF or distortion or which was better or worse, but just a couple guys just spending some time putting a bunch of different lenses on their camera and sitting back and watching the personality of each lens.

Good thing to do.

Sometimes we forget about the emotion.

Discarding the colour and contrast differences between all the different lenses for a second, They all look great. Even the $350 dollar canon 50mm 1.4 has its charm.
Says to me that you don't need to blow a fortune on glass, especially with all the modern colour correction tools out there these days, you can easily match colour and tone between them all quite quickly.
Very good.

I'm sensing that this test has flaws. For instance, the Red Pro prime minimum focus distance, 12" shows a much larger field of view than the Red Pro zoom at 50mm , or optimo 30-80 24" etc. I'm not convinced that they executed this part of the test properly, or perhaps lost track of file due to labeling etc. It should be closer than the mini S4i (20"). Unfortunately it calls into question the validity of other aspects of the test. Am I wrong? Also, the RPP exhibits some serious veiling flare I have never encountered. Big palm print on the back element from a lens change?

Flawed? I don't think so.
I'd say this is more of an experiment than a test. Shoot with different lenses and notice the differences (positive, negative, beautiful, cold, warmth etc). I don't see this as a test to actually prove anything in particular.

Absolutely Jarred! Absolutely!

I have an old set of Canon FDs here that produce incredible images on my Epic.
They a little less contrast than my Zeiss ZFs, but they have a magic i can't describe, a color response that can't be just compensated by white balance.

Cheers!

+1 ... some of the best looking glass i saw was the 50mm rpp which is still fairly cheap. Also I use my afs f1.4 nikkor's with my rpp set(only use the rpp when i have to rack focus), and just quickly match things in post. It's just crazy what u can do with a fairly inexpensive red setup shooting between 3k-6k r3d, especially for 2k dcp final. I think the real trick nowadays is mastering digital processes.

Very interesting! Thanks!

Only odd thing that Canon 50mm looks a lot better than that, every other time I've seen it, and the 50mm L 1.2 is again, far better. Maybe they had a bad copy?
