  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

this is really stunning

It's so easy to judge from a safe distance, without regard for budget, deadline, or resources available. This was done by 2 guys, in 2 and a half months. I think you could take almost any other 2 guys on the planet, and not get as good a result in that amount of time.

Whoa there... I just said the wide kitchen shot wasn't up to snuff with the rest of the imagery. The work is amazing, just not that kitchen shot and I feel it detracts from the rest.

So I wanna see some of your work that shows this up as "barely passable."

It's been about 2 years since I've done any architectural visualization, I'll have to visit some tape archives. But you're right, that's only fair. I've got a piece or two around that are on par with that kitchen shot, which were rejected by clients as not good enough or not realistic enough, wrong feel, etc..

It's all really amazing CG. I would just question why it's all CG. :D Couldn't find a batch of lemons and a bowl to their liking?

Yeah... Why climb a mountain, when you can just take the tram or a helicopter straight to the top? :)

This would be targeted at a very discerning audience given the level of execution, which I suppose would be the right target for high end products.

Uh... Dude, it's Silestone. In the world of mid range to high-dollar custom homes, let's say $750K and up, it's affectionately known as "sillystone". It's an alternative to natural stone tops as it's a very hard composite material that is mixed with quartz and then fabricated as you would a granite countertop. But because it's a man-made composite, they can also do certain shapes, such as molded-in sinks or they can mold with a variety of surface textures, rather than trying to grind them in during fabrication. The stuff is tough as hell and even though it's often called "sillystone" in a lot of markets, it's pretty darn popular -- not everyone wants to buy the granite for every room in the house. I have Silestone in my laundry room. ;) It comes in like 60 different colors and I think you can buy it at a lot of mainstream places like Home Depot too. I haven't built any houses in the past two years -- the market is in the dumper, but I've had it installed in a few. Quite honestly, I call it "sillystone", but I love the stuff.

Which brings me back to this animation, especially the longer version that was linked here earlier. As cool as the bouncing and smashing fruit, crashing crystals, etc.. are, there is really nothing there to showcase a countertop product or even an accurate depiction of what these countertops look like.

Oh. Well, then in my defense! (since you are so passionate about this :) I was focusing on the fruit thinking counter tops and what have you would be easier to sell (as photo-realistic), so I didn't pay much attention to the non-natural stuff. I didn't mean to offend anyone's fine taste (Did I? I am confused. Put me down for a round or two, just in case ;)

Yeah... Why climb a mountain, when you can just take the tram or a helicopter straight to the top? :)

That question bounces around my head all day every time I go climbing (That and "hi ho, hi ho... "; it's insidious!). The answer is always the same, and also the drive of most creative endeavors: Masochistic Ego. :D

This is ALL CGI! No real footage involved. Looks 10 times better than Avatar, made buy two guys in a couple months with ordinary PCs.

It is very impressive, but you must realize that this is 1 minute long and Avatar is closer to 3 hours. The render times at that level of quality would be veeeeery long I imagine, cost prohibitive and just plain impractical.

If it makes 10 times as much money as Avatar...

OK, OK, I was using hyperbole when I described it as "10 times better than Avatar". My point is, its incredible that one person could accomplish this in a short time when so much time and money goes into projects that don't have nearly the level of realism.

He rendered this on an ordinary PC though, he didn't have a massive render farm. Must be a real wizard at optimizing render times.

That's basically what I meant by optimizing render times. Finding shortcuts that will accomplish what you need.

Well it's a bit easier to optimize 5 pieces of fruit than it is 10,000,000 plants 350 characters 9,000,000,000,000 smoke voxels, 100TB of textures and GI.

It's very well done CGI but CG fruit is literally often the first tutorial people do when learning 3D. Now nobody's first fruit ever looks this amazing but let's keep things in perspective, we're comparing Apples to... uhh... Navis here. :D

Then again there's always ILM's horrible Episode II apple ughhh...

Very cool.

A lot of this doesn't come down to the technical - rather inspired direction a decent eye for photography... No need for a render farm.
