This is a one to one Duck

Hello

This duck is 1 to 1 TIF. Cropped around the duck but NOT blown up.
Its an 'Actual Size' of a TIF. Using Zeiss Nikon lens 85mm. Should it be this soft?
(its a portion of the frame naturally, but not enlarged in any way)

My duck looks like it went through a "pastel paint" filter in photoshop.. bizzare melted focus edges..
I did focus correctly.. focus assisted, ect ect

If i must correct back focus, how do i do that?
Hoping i put the nikon mount nice a flat as there was a cable underneath to carefully stick in a long narrow hole.. not easy..

First problem I see is you are overexposed, its hard to tell much more from this cropped jpeg. Why dont you post the original tiff or dpx in the original thread you started. Also looks like your focus is behind the duck.

Agreed, need to see the full image and it does look overexposed. Also could have something to do with the fact that RED ONE does not sharpen the image, that must be done in post.

What ISO and where you trying to focus on the duck?

Well, overexposed, but also the focus point is clearly behind the duck. The water in the upper left section is well focused, IMO.

Hard to tell. The image is over-exposed and the unsharpness could be motion blur.

You're using a long lens, fairly wide open, so your focus is probably going to be very narrow. At F5.6 from 20' away you are looking at less than a foot of focus range. Not much room for error. Have you used the monochrome with edge highlights mode. Can be very useful.

I'd second the notion that your focus is too deep. However, to me it looks like the biggest problem (that may be affecting how easy it is to judge how in focus it is) is that it is way over exposed. The jpeg compression is probably not helping any either.

To adjust your back focus you loosen the hex screws on the collar and rotate it until you have total focus.

You should get a focus chart to do this.

YUP - overexposed (could be treatment in RC/RA adding to the mess) and missed focus. If you were focusing by eye and this is really a 1:1 crop, I don't blame you though. Would be close to impossible to hit with Nikon optics, @ least without using the focus tools. Looks a bit like you haven't used either the focusing or the exposure tools in camera properly and in addition it looks like the development is crappy.

Water, walls, objects always look sharper than faces, skin or feathers.. because less detail is needed for them to look sharp. so yeah, of course the water looks sharper.. especially if the duck isnt very sharp. I clearly focused on the duck.. I used focus assist on his very face..I havent managed a perfectly sharp shot the whole time i had the red. So something is wrong. I did it with a tea of experienced DPs as well.

But if you look at the water, it's out of focus around the duck and in focus behind it... The exposure (or post treatment) isn't very good...

And the duck has had to be very small in the frame, for this to be a 1:1 crop.

But check your backfocus, if you're unsure. It's really quite easy to adjust on the RED.

I agree..the duck wasnt big in the frame.. but 1 to 1 crop should look cristal sharp no? Considering 1 to 1 is what a movie screen will display. I dont know how to fix back focus yet.. ill try twisting the mount using a focus chart.. Was maybe a little overexposed but i have tons more of stuff also this soft.
