  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

This camera is too awesome. Image quality way too outstanding for price.

You are frustrated? This is NOT what I signed up for. All I ever really wanted to do was collect a ton of $1000 deposits and spend a few weeks in Fiji...

Jim

John Farrand, ex-CEO of Panavision, now runs a resort there. Perhaps you can get a nice package deal.

But seriously guys.
I paid a lot of money for this camera only to find out it has only one chip.
Everybody says RED is soooo inexpensive in comparison to say Varicam, but they are friggin forgetting that the Varicam has 3 friggin chips as apposed to Red's measly one chip. So if you price it out you find out that a 60 thousand or so dollar Varicam body is really just the same price as your 20 or so thousand dollar Red body just with two extra chips all in one camera.

Like the old saying goes three chips are better than one. And my friends, no old saying has ever been wrong.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. I've also recently discovered that compact chip design of these more proffesional cameras gives them focus-ability that Red doesn't have. So for example on Red I'm focusing on this actress in the forground and suddenly I realize THE FRIGGIN BACKGROUND IS ALL OUT OF FOCUS. So I turn the focus to try and solve this problem and then THE FRIGGIN ACTRESS IS OUT OF FOCUS!!! WTF!!! Never before did I encounter problems like this. Red should be more open about this problem if they are going to continue to call this a professional camera.

Anyways, I just hope the Red team intends to address some of these issues. Let's hope Epic is a three chip camera with a compact sensor.

Jim, I purchased 24 cases of VHS tapes from a K-Mart warehouse sale because you said this camera is the best video camera out there. Now I'm hearing all this talk about flash cards, hell I can understand a kid in grade school using flash cards but this? are you OK? This camera damn well better use my tapes or I'll call the FBI.

Anyone with a clear analythical mind can see from the pure evidence of Jims posts that build 16 is a Scam and just a way to collect more deposits. My bet is that most of them shots really are done with a D1 and messed a bit with graininess in photoshop to shout out random and impressive ISO numbers. Anyone here used build 16 yet raise your hands!

Right?
Just what I thought.
It's pure hyperbole...

And the hype with the cute chicks and the expensive motifs!!!
When I received my cam, I eagerly opened the box expecting some milk girls to shoot, but there were none around.

All I have had is Lene Alexandra Øien, and that hardly counts as a pure milkgirl... ACtually she only had champagne.

I didn't even get a nice Porche or a cool pair of Ray Bans (or were those Nike shades on them pictures???) to go with my cam. It was just a black aluminum brick with this really weird, but pretty cool, little black-looking lens in front of it. (BTW what is the FT stop of that thing? I know it's your cheapest default lens, but I was a bit weary when I saw you had printed "RED" all over it. It doesn't come up in the images, though, as they are mostly black. Can I use ISO 3200 to get a more useable image from the RED DEFAULT BLACK PLASTIC BASIC LENS with RED LOGO???? Really trying to understand this. Do I ned "i" to use it?)

What can I do with the cam without shades, porche, milkgirls or even the most basic 100x digital zoom and batteries? Should I start blowing chewing-gum as a profession?

And where is that implied manual of: "How to be a rockstar photographer and post production dude" in 24 hours?

Really Jim. Get real. Stop the hype. We're all getting messed with, angry and extremely disapointed when real life hits us with some RED boxes around here.

Cards are too small for a camera of that size. There should be more room in there. If the cards were larger maybe we could get more footage.

And for that price they could have put picture effects.
My Mac has them. I mean really.

And whats all this talk from the red camp about 'coming out of beta' soon. Beta was obsolete years ago!!!! Also I have some inside info. (i.e. I read on another forum) that the workflow issues will be resolved in Build 16 because Red has done a deal with i-movie. I'll believe it when I see it.

And then they even talk about backwards compatibility. But the Scarlet lens won't even fit on the Red!

Another very serious complaint is that Before Red the geek in me could always look forward to the once-a-year Macworld, featuring the one and only Steve Jobs. After months of being left in the dark, and wild speculations, HE would transcend upon us, giving us a glimpse of heaven.

But now Jim and Jarred and all those others they just come with awesome news on a regular basis. And they make it casual! And - behold - they let us mere mortals participate? This is just not fair.
Mac World won't be even half as fun... And I hold everyone at Red responsible.

Talking of - most software is not optimized for Vista. And everyone know that this is the most advanced operating system. Ever. (Though TurtleOS for C64 came a close second.)

Finally, on all the videos with Jim, he always is smiling. Even during NAB when he gets asked the same question over and over again by a multitude of bloggers who don't know about sound recording. He is always, always happy. This can only prove that the whole Red thing is a Scam, and Jim managed to pull it all off. We haven't yet figured out what the scam is, and he knows it, enjoys it. What a wicked criminal mind...

WOW, those iMovie news are really good!

just to clearify: I think they actually mean they're coming out of digibeta, as that's still quite a viable option most places...

But does this confirm the rumor that it's actually SONY that makes the red CCD (It is really a CCD, we're just not told so yet, but I read that too somewhere else...)

Red publishes graphics where it appears that 4k is like 500 times bigger than SD. But SD is like what, 0.5k. So it is 8 x bigger. But those Sony's have 3 chips, as another poster so rightfully has disclosed. So the Red sensor is really just about 2.6 x bigger.
Now Sony literature clearly shows that their HDV is at least 3 x more than SD. Clearly more than a Red. And if you take a 3 chip HDV, than that becomes 9 times as much. Beating Red by far. And at the same time managing to cram all this information into a miniDV tape.

And you guys claim that Sony should be scared!

Now that I had some more hands-on experience with this Red camera, it is time to resurrect this thread.

I ordered the camera about 6 months before receiving it, and I am totally disappointed. There are many features on this camera that I had not ordered. 1:1 zoom. Pristine audio - even with phantom power. I-pins enabled. Availability of 16gb cards. 7" Pro LCD. Less noise in the shadows. The dove tail is much better than anticipated. No problems whatsoever with battery connectors. A much improved President. And a whole lotta more I am too frustrated to even think about...

But worst of all: in the manual it says that a 512 (mb) SD card would be included. I only got a 1 (gb) SD card. This is blatant!

Can somebody ban these nay-sayers?

This thread is awesome.

Too bad that camera (what was it called again) is so powerful; look at all the jobs it's going to eliminate! Think of all the development labs it will put out of business! I mean, those poor guys must have families too, right?
