  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Third Party CF Cards for RED ONE MX?

Come on RED, throw some of us po' boys still working with your first baby a bone here!

While they're at it, how about support for the 240GB SSDs and some enhanced functionality in the menus (i.e. saving & loading states that include resolution and frame rates - jumping to 3K 60fps with one of the functiion keys). It's bad enough R1 was left out of the sensor upgrades after MX. Small enhancements like this would be nice.

P.S.- I'm thankful though that the camera is incredibly reliable.

If anyone wants to know, I tried to use Lexar 32GB PRO COMPACT FLASH CARD(1066x). No luck. My Red One wouldn't even format the cards.

Lexar 256 CF Card

Lexar 256 CF Card

i just bought a Lexar 256GB card and tried it, got a message that said the card would only support 2K because it was not fast enough.

i then went to my Blackmagic Speed Test and tested the original RED 16GB card, it write speed was 7MB/s and read was 11.3MB/s, the Lexar tested 56MB/s write and write is 104 MB/s! should be more that fast enough to handle the 4k footage. Someone please do a simple hack to enable these cards!!

Message below when inserting the 256 lexar card,

It does not say it is not fast enough, only that it is not verified! i formatted the card to FAT 32 to see if it would help but it did not help.

Lexar 2GB speed test

RED 16GB card Speed Test, don't know why it is so slow.

It's all about the firmware. RED is protecting against using unauthorized media. There have been many debates about it. At this point with R1 EOL'd I don't think we'll see any new firmware updates to address this. It's possible that it's just too much of a headache at this point for them to receive calls about an older camera having problems with corrupt media. It also could be that there's more to how things are written to those cards than just speed alone. Either way, I think the best option is to just get an SSD module for the camera and buy up the 1.8 SSDs that people are trying to unload. Every once and a while a great deal pops up here. I picked up a 128 for $500. Works like a charm.

Where do you get a module? Red does not even list RED One in the store any more so i thought that was not an option.

I actually have one that I'd sell for $1500 with two 64gb cards and a reader if anyone is interested.

Although an "Allow Slow Media" option would also allow more of the actual Red Media to work too.

Did you try to record to it in 2K RC28? I'd be interested to know if it could use the full 256GB of the card.

Any word on if this works yet? Will it ever work? has anyone got 4k recording to work on the red-mx with a 3rd party CF Card? Would love this option.

Quite a few years ago I had a lexar 16 g CF card working on my red one. Then I went and blabbed about it on reduser and they cease to work after the next firmware upgrade. Maybe if someone finds one that works the PM route would be a better place to discuss.
