  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I currently am working with just a RED 16GB CF Card and as you guys probably know, the record time is very very short. Are there any non RED branded CF cards that work with the MX camera that i can shoot 4.5K and 4K 16:9 with?

As far as I'm aware, no.

In a perfect scenario you could just pop in a Lexar 64GB 1066x but sadly there are firmware issues with 3rd party compact flash cards.

The latest Sandisk Extreme Pro CF cards are intended for use in 4K cameras, but apparently nothing ever came of the RED/Sandisk dialogue to get those working with the RED One after Sandisk had claimed compatibility in their media information without RED's endorsement. The only option for RED One owners to get longer recording time is to upgrade to the REDMAG 1.8 module and use 48GB/64GB REDMAG 1.8 SSDs. The 240GB REDMAG units don't work with the RED One.

Yes I am a bit disappointed that RED did not extend support to these newer CF cards.
The SSD REDMAGs are nice though and RED did a cool thing in putting the Side module for the RED ONE
back into production.

Hey Mike,

I have some ready to shoot (cables, mounting, AC) 320GB RED DRIVES for sale.
A world of difference compared to CF cards and with the vibration isolation on the included ET Mounts make
handheld use no problem.

I'm negotiable with the price.

PM if interested.

you can get them on ebay ..they are made by red, but are used ;)

I'm thinking then when I have the money to do so, I will find a used RED DRIVE and buy that. Such a bummer there are no stable CF cards bigger then the RED 16GB available for the R1, i really dont understand that.

Of course there are. Red just doesn't have a lot of incentive to allow us to use them.

Stephen

Stephen, are you saying there are CF cards out there that are stable and work, RED just does not advertise it to us, or are you saying RED built there cameras were the cards won't work even if the card says it works with 4k?

Red limits any non-Red certified CF cards to 2K if I recall correctly. While I understand the frustration, this just isn't much of a Red priority going forward.

There are 8gb Lexar cards that work with the red one but only the special ones that are the same as the Red 8gb cards.
Only the Red Compact flash cards are in the whitelist basically.
You can use many different compact flash cards but only as slow media (2K only)

Freya

Freya is correct. Certain Lexar 8 gig cards will work and we have several of them, but only RED 16 gig cards will work.

I am all but certain that there are 64 gig CF cards that will work with the RED One if the camera were "cut loose" from the non-RED restrictions, and at 4K no less, but RED has no incentive to allow them to work, as that would eliminate all demand for SSD media for RED One owners.

The thing is, the options for new 1.8 RED SSD media are very limited for R1 right now. The only one that works properly is the 64GB and I wonder if that will eventually be phased out by MiniMags. The 48GB still doesn't work if I recall. I'd rather stick with RED approved SSDs personally. But, I can see others with CF module wanting to have options.

Part of the problem might be that firmware engineering may have been halted at RED. We haven't seen a firmware update in a long time and I don't expect one now that the program has moved a couple of generations past the R1.

256GB 1.8" RED SSD works with R1. But no longer available new.

Yes I picked up some used 256GB REDMAGS that work well on my R1.
I also shot with 128GB mags that worked fine too. The newer 240GB SSDs do not work and the 48GB SSD was
never compatible. If RED does not want to commit resources toward making newer R1 compatible SSDs, it may
be an area where an authorized 3rd party can step in. To be honest though, there will likely be a healthy abundance of
used REDMAGS for a good while.

I know, so do 128GB SSD. I'm saying if you are buying new. The 64GB is the only option right now. the 240GB is not compatible and the 48GB was originally compatible but doesn't seem to actually work.
So used market is becoming the only option for larger capacities.

We have to face facts: We are orphans now.

Stephen

do the red drives still work with the R1?

Yes the red one still supports red drives.
It supports all the media it has supported in the past (well since about build 15 anyway) but it doesn't support any media it hasn't been told to support.
Things like 48gb SSD's don't work as they aren't in the white list.
I think the nice thing to do if the Red One is really going to be EOL would be to do one last firmware update with the option "Enable Bad media" or something of that nature that would disable the white list for those who wish to experiment.

Assuming there really isn't going to be another R1 update. Sometimes Red talk as if there will be one but they just havn't had the time.

Freya

I don't think "enable bad media" or "enable unapproved media" would take more than an hour of coding. . . if that.

Stephen

well, you will have to edit the coding, go to the part where the coding is checking the media in the camera, DELETE those coding lines, SAVE, reload the coding in a test camera, check the firmware is working fine, and finally uploading the new firmware in the web page.

mmmm!!!!.......30 minutes for an experience programer, 2 hours for a rocky programer!!!
