  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thinking of replacing Red Touch with Smallhd DP6, need assurance.

Hi guys,

I own DP6, HDMI version. I can upgrade it to SDI version. I love the resolution, hood and battery design of DP6. Yellowish tint issues not so much.
AS for RED Touch, no experience with that at all. But on paper it has less resolution, is powered from the same redvolts that power the camera and any kind of hood does not allow to use the touch functionality.

I would like to use DP6 instead of Red Touch when Scarlet arrives. Camera will be controlled by DSMC side handle. I have several questions.

1. Will I get full Scarlet menus via HDMI on DP6? What about SDI?
2. Can each and every function and setting be controlled with DSMC side handle and visual feedback provided on DP6?
3. According to this http://www.smallhd.com/s.nl/ctype.KB/it.I/id.1694/KB.870/.f I will have to mount DP6 upside down. It his still the case or is the information outdated?
4. Except for the touchscreen functionality, will I lose something more by not using Red Touch LCD? I know I will not be able to perform a "touch to focus" but otherwise autofocus functionality with compatible lenses will still be available, yes? Or is red touch LCD mandatory for that?

Thanks,
Kamilla

+1 on this
also is predator vision / false color available on 3rd party monitors

Thank you Ryan. I've read that thread but none of these questions were answered in full. Could anyone who has experience with DP6 together with red one / epic share their thoughts?

Could I make suggestion before you decide, maybe download the Epic manual & read how the display interfaces with the camera, also how remote & the handle work. This would give you better idea of what you can expect using the touch screen monitor on the Scarlet X which seems pretty cool.

I would strongly encourage the use of the SDI upgrade if you decide to use it this way. HDMI is too flaky. Too Many pins in a not that durable cable.

I'm actually thinking of doing the same thing. If you are in a really remote place I would try to make sure you have friend who has at least the original red LCD so that if you have any trouble initiating the menu function over SDI you can kind of get it set.

Great questions Kamilla. I hope someone can give you the answers, especially for questions one and two, about whether menu options are transferred across hdmi and sdi, and likewise whether side handle choices are visible across hdmi and sdi.

I would also add a question about "zoom in to focus." Not sure how it works on RED's TOUCH but I would imagine it's a necessity at 4K/5K.

The DP6 has 1:1 mapping, which is really nice. It gives you a look at the actual, unscaled image and you can move the 'view' around to see different parts of the image using the wheel and buttons on the monitor.

All points but this, is really good, as you ned 1:1 out of the camera too, to get this, which you can have on the touch too

That said, I am interested in how you compare those two.

Another option is the old 5,6 or 7 montors. They are very nice, too...

Not quite on the same thread hope im not derailing.. but im planning on using Small HD DP4 instead of bomb EVF .. thread just got me wondering.. can you can run SDI and HDMI out of scarlet simultaneously?

Anyone know how much longer the Redvolts will last on an Epic/Scarlet when using one of these self powered monitors?

This may be a silly question but is 1:1 mapping solely depending on the monitors ability to do this, or can Scarlet/Epic send a 1:1 signal out too? :)

I´m thinking about using my Ikan VH7 to start with, until I can afford something more appropriate, like a Red touch 5". Do you think it´ll work ok for framing and focus even thou it´s kind of crappy and don´t have all the bells and whistles? (if HDMI is enabled in the Scarlet on release) :)

Ah right, cause you only get 1080p over SDI right? So 1:1 mapping gives you 1:1 of 1080p if that's correct....

Still not bad, but it ain't 4K :emote_head_explode:

I would like to use my tvlogic 5.6" instead of the red touchscreen as well. I also want to go with the redmote instead of the side handle. Anyone who has used the redmote, touchscreen, and side handle, which seems the most convenient method of control? The redmote seems more versatile and less expensive than the side handle at first glance, but I havent used them so it's hard to know how it will be in real life.

My reasoning is basically that I do not like the side handle or redvolt system for the price, weight, and short life compared with the redmote option and external battery options. In my mind <30min battery runtimes would not be useable and $200 for 30wh batteries is quite pricey, as is $1k for the slot to put the underpowered battery in.

The touchscreen looks nice but it seems somewhat expensive and limited in its configuration options and will draw even more power in an already power hungry system. I'm pretty comfortable with my current tvlogic monitor that is less expensive and a lot higher resolution, so for my purposes and budget it makes little sense to buy another more expensive monitor that is less than half the resolution and only works with one camera and will put a further drain on the expensive batteries.

As for the 1:1 thing, why would 1:1 be limited to the touchscreen? Won't 1:1 focus assist work with any monitor like it does on RED1? I also hardly expect a touchscreen to be especially fast for navigation since my hand is rarely on or near my monitor while camera operating, and I expect it will also have issues with blocking your view of the monitor if you have to have your fingers on the monitor to adjust settings. I've been using an FS100 and GH2 lately both of which have touchscreen control capabilities and it is the last way I would ever control the cameras since my hands always prefer to be on the body of the camera than on the screen, out of the way of my view of the screen.

Yes its awesome we use it to check focus mid shot (while still recording). Its a great tool that was made for DSLR's. It can give you the confidence that you are still in focus if your talent missed their mark.
