  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

There must be a trick with this Scarlet thing.

People, can we please put a stop to this nonsense. The camera was announced four 4 days ago and it is still in the process of pre-production. We don’t need this kind of misinformation here.
A year from know when Scarlet comes out you will decide if it is for you or not. If you can’t afford it, then get a less expensive one. This will be a camera for people who are seriously looking for a professional tool to work with without breaking the bank to get it. It is a fact, and every professional and serious amateur and students know it, that every single camera out there needs accessories to work with. That is a real truth. If you can’t live with that then either go somewhere else to rant about it or find another profession. When all the facts are in during the next few months we will know about everything we will need to get the camera rolling. In the meantime continue using the equipment you have and start saving money ‘till next year.

The trick is volume and that they avoid the years of beta testing and put it on us instead. Also where's the marketing cost? They've managed to release a product with only two costs (more or less). A website and NAB. Also there's no true cost in tech support, at least not yet.

Now that is quite cool and clever, although I don't think they knew it would come to these proportions.

I wouldn't be surprised if Scarlet actually sells over 10000 units and counting (or I might not even be close to the amount). REDOne is up to 4000 right now.

Of course he makes some back in accessories but nowhere near what's necessary.

So take all these equations together and you can figure out yourself, that if production costs are low (since they took orders before they produced, they were able to do immediate bulk deals). If you're marketing cost are less than zero and you're tech support up to around 10 people. Well how expensive does it need to be?

Prons - We get the opportunity to afford cameras we would only dream of.

Cons - We are a part of the beta testing, with a lot of grief together with the joy.

Last but not least I hope that Jim and the guys are having a plan considering support, because with this many cameras out there it's going to be needed. I had to wait 2 months for crucial parts with my camera and had to shoot with gaffer tape all around it (actually they haven't arrived yet). My patience is because of what I said above, but when Epic comes it won't be, then I will probably expect they know better.

Kind regards,

Fredrik

It is a huge endeavor to work on a project as big as Red is. The amount of technology, manufacturing and support needed is staggering. It will take a lot of work from them. All we need to do is support and encourage them as much as we can.

200$ for a bunch of rods that I can purchase at a hardware store at a fraction of the price?

Which store? What rods? I am on my way and will buy a truckload of them if they are any good and available at a hardware store for a fraction of the price!!!

Also the batteries, the charger, cables, etc. are waaaaay overpriced!

Nope, not at all. Pretty good prices for the quality and built. Check out AB or IDX.

It wouldn't be a surprise for me if we'll find out that only the Scarlet body costs $3000 and you will have to pay extra for all the other vital stuff.

All this is a nonsense! As someone else said here, praise the day when a 3K for 3K was announced and be happy and thankful. Some mere 5 years ago none of us would even dream about HD for less than $20k!

As someone mentioned elsewhere, research and development is a major part of the cost for bringing out a new model. But I guess on something like the Scarlet that's less of a cost because it's a less-features version of the Red One and Epic, which means that research and development costs would be much lower than on something like the Epic. Does that sound right?

Also it's about people taking a cut. Shops take about 50% of the price you pay over the counter, which actually means that for the camera which costs you $10k the manufacturer and your local store get about $5k each.

And you can be sure that if you make 5000 cameras in a factory in China they don't even work out at $500 per unit. Probably more like $100 p/unit.

So Red is probably trying to create a camera that they can produce en masse, which will make it much cheaper to produce than something like the Red One, thus considerably lowering their production costs. They also avoid the middleman who takes almost 50% of the profits, and because they probably didn't have to do too much research and development, lower their pre-production costs.

Also, because we're such a vociferous bunch they've got a ready-made focus group which doesn't cost them a cent.

Like I said somewhere else before, manufacturers in this business choose from a group of truly knowledgeable individuals to help in their research and developing. They use them as beta testers as well and according to their feedback they make necessary changes. These professionals do not come out on forums like these and yell out their opinions and requests. Get it in your heads people; Red is not going to pay any attention to everybody out there with a suggestion. They already said that this forum is not for that. They do not need a vociferous bunch, they just need a few knowledgeable people.
With the advent of the internet and forums like these everybody has suddenly become an expert. Just because you see your name next to the post doesn’t make you more important.
You can’t gang up on Red and Co. and force them or influence them to do anything they are not planning to do. Please, understand that. End of story.

he said accessories not lenses.

what are you talking?
overpriced assecoires? which one is overpriced?
did you ever tried to buy an Arri MB, or Cooke optics?

They are cheap.....a compromise between quality and price!

Can you have Premium assecoires...yes
can you have affordable assecoires...yes

so what is your point?

----Arri FF4 costs around 3500 USD
----Arri MB costs around 4000 USD
----a new zeiss set costs 50 000 USD
----a new cooke set costs 80 000 USD
---the new optimo rouge costs 20 000 USD-pretty cheap

Are you talking about CF cards? hell 200 for a working CF card is good...sure you could buy cheaper...but do you then have support from the manufactor when it doesnt handle the footage?- NO
