3k at 3000$,2/3" sensor, etc. sounds way to good to be true...
There must be a trick or something.
Like for example the non-removable battery in the iPhone,or the overpriced accesories for the Red One,etc...
How is Red going to make money if they sell this camera at such a low price?

what are you talking?
overpriced assecoires? which one is overpriced?
did you ever tried to buy an Arri MB, or Cooke optics?

They are cheap.....a compromise between quality and price!

Can you have Premium assecoires...yes
can you have affordable assecoires...yes

so what is your point?

----Arri FF4 costs around 3500 USD
----Arri MB costs around 4000 USD
----a new zeiss set costs 50 000 USD
----a new cooke set costs 80 000 USD
---the new optimo rouge costs 20 000 USD-pretty cheap

Are you talking about CF cards? hell 200 for a working CF card is good...sure you could buy cheaper...but do you then have support from the manufactor when it doesnt handle the footage?- NO

you should praise the day when 3k for 3k was announced

OK....the Red One body is probably a bargain at 17.500$ but check the other vital accesories and their prices.
200$ just for a handle to hold the camera?????
200$ for a bunch of rods that I can purchase at a hardware store at a fraction of the price?
Are they covered in gold maybe ?
Also the batteries, the charger, cables, etc. are waaaaay overpriced!
It wouldn't be a surprise for me if we'll find out that only the Scarlet body costs $3000 and you will have to pay extra for all the other vital stuff.

tango blue handles cost 250 Dollar
look for ET rods...aluminium ultraweight....if you can feed the needs, go on, make some and sell them...
Batteries are in the midrange

You forget something really important...a lot of people doesnt have the time to make things in the backyard...they buy it, and pay a little premium for support...

-----so you know for every assecoire there is a cheaper alternative, so choose what fits your needs.

i went for the Viewfactor FF....instead the Arri FF4...paid 2k...its a steal

SCARLET is a scam, that's the trick. The whole RED One was just an elaborate ruse to build trust - in a few months Jim will start taking deposits for SCARLET and then they'll vanish!

Or, alternatively RED is looking to diversify their market and wants to compete in the 'prosumer' world.

Ahhh....yes! I was right!
Check this clip:

That guy says that a full kit of Scarlet will cost much more than $3k.
It also mentions that Scarlet will be compatible with Red One accesories.
However paying 200$ for a handle and 500$ for a charger it's kinda out of place for a $3k camera.

The point is you don't need to kit it out. Out of the box, for 'under $3k' it will do all that you'd expect of a camera. It has an LCD, and lens and whatever else you'd want. The full kit demoed on that camera is entirely optional. It's not necessary at all for function.

My only concern on that point is that at the moment without a handle or something the ergonomics of the current design look awkward, as in it will be hard to handle. But I suspect that will not be the case in the final product - RED want something that your mum can use if she wants.

The prices are very sound. The camera without the matte, handles, rods, etc..., looks naked and all the hardware will help make the camera not just look more professional, but operate much more user friendly compared with grey market unproffesional cheopo goods. The camera, as is, looks hot. Until I can afford a good used red one, the camera will serve me well as long as it is pimped out, and after prices drop signicantly on the red one, maybe NAB 2009 when new products are shown, the Scarlet will there after make a perfect B cam associated with it's bigger brother when the time comes. Working as a stage hand and doing some riggin' setting up concerts and a few film productions up in CA for a brief time, once you use proffesional equipment, you can't go back. Kind of like organic milk.

The Red Digital Cinema Camera Company reserves the right to refuse service to anyone with a bad attitude. ...
Therefore.....NO SCARLET FOR YOU!!!!!!

Maybe an introductory thread on how great the pricing system is and how much greater the RED cameras are for the price for newcomers?

When I tell my laymen friends about the RED, they dont get it until I tell them that the price is revolutionary... and that the camera is so much more than anything in existence....

...and even then...

Umm....

It has an LCD

That's news to me... Where did you hear / read that?

My only concern on that point is that at the moment without a handle or something the ergonomics of the current design look awkward, as in it will be hard to handle. But I suspect that will not be the case in the final product - RED want something that your mum can use if she wants.

I seem to recall overhearing Jim mentioning "soccer moms" at the RED tent... There will have to be a complete re-design if that is going to happen. "Soccer moms" are not going to want Scarlet. They're going to want something cute and compact that will fit in a small purse or handbag. Something they can one-hand while socializing with other soccer moms and sipping their Starbucks latte. Soccer moms in general are not going to want to process RAW footage. For many of them, it's beyond their abilities to plug in a digital point and shoot camera to download internally processed jpegs to iPhoto just so they can print a few of their snapshots.

On the other hand. Scarlet is going to be the ultimate "gadget dad" camera. Every gadget-oriented and tech-savvy soccer dad with $6K to spend on a camera package is going to want one. The same guys that ran out an bought a Sony FX1 or HVX200 just to shoot home movies.

That said, Scarlet looks like a great camera for me to shoot my kids / home movies with. In fact, it will probably be one of the primary reasons I would buy it. ....My wife will not understand how to plug it in, what RAW image data is, etc.. Nor will she be willing to learn.

When Sony Japan sells to Sony London or US and then to a retailer
plus the advertizing budget, you add it all, it is more than 50%
of the price you pay for any product .
RED does not have this way to the market, so its products can be less expensive, don't you think ?

The secret to Red's low prices is the cheap labor pool of American zombies, and the weak US dollar.

Ok. 3000 $ looks too little for 3k, 2/3 sensor, and fixed HD zoom lens proffesional camera. But let see. Red ONE is in the ballpark quality of highest end cameras and the price is several times lover. I have no doubt that Scarlet is lot, lot more better than HVX200 and any other camera in this range. So I think there is not going to be DVXuser site soon anymore. Professionals and studios who have budget will go for Red One and EPIC, but everybody else, - Scarlet.
C'mon people, who doesn't believe Jim after all he has done? His reputation and builded trust is not just anything. You have to be fool not to expect great camera for the price! If He says it will be proffesional camera then it will be...there is no point explaining this anymore. It costs 3k but if I end up with double cost to have complete working system it is more than OK.
