  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

There is no need to be mean :(

I don't say it lightly, I had a good look at his website, read his references and watched his "work". Take a look yourself. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to realize this guy is trying it on - the evidence is plain to see.

I looked at the same links and I did not see anything more than a crowd funding attempt to get a camera. Call it a scam if you want but in your eyes, all crowd funding is a scam. You realize if he does not reach the desired amount, he gets nothing? Hardly a scam artist, he just greatly overestimated the generosity of members here. If I were you, I would be careful about labeling someone as a scam artist and a fraud unless you actually have evidence. Otherwise it is just slander. Once again, the internet has greatly reduced our desire to act civil. We hide behind our profiles and say things we would never say in real life.

I personally don't think online communication is the end-of-civility. True, it may encourage it in certain people, but if you look about the world at all, the "end of civility" has been pretty rampant for centuries. And some of the most "civilized" people have promulgated some pretty uncivil acts.

Perhaps the movie-making world (a privileged one) is more rarified and "civil" (at least on the surface) than many others. But if you look at many of the privileged political and corporate and celebrity pundit and blogging elite throughout the world I would be reluctant to call much of their behavior toward mother earth or humanity at large "civil" -- despite perhaps maintaining a polite facade. And even that is often pimply.

Sometimes the call for "civility" can be an excuse for not calling out bad behavior. I am NOT saying this is at all the case here, I didn't read the thread. But while I think civility is a good thing, it has to be authentic and more than surface deep. There is a place for righteous well-placed anger (not violence or humiliation) in a civil society, especially one drunk on genius-me and entitlement. Which itself speaks to a distortion of civility in my book.

But I think it's heartening people are concerned enough to consider what is and isn't civil. A sign of civility at work, I'd say.

Andrew, what happened to civility on this board?

I have never said that all crowd funding is a scam. Never. You are wrong to suggest such. Indeed, I help and encourage many non-profit films and filmmakers; I give my time, my gear and my money.

I was the first poster in the original thread and I called it as I saw it; someone trying it on, trying to raise money by pretending to be a bona-fide independent film producer and director. On his website he had numerous copyright infringements and dubious uses of other people's intellectual property. Also, he made claims about himself and his filmmaking that more than stretched incredulity. Therefore, I concluded he was trying to raise money under false pretenses, maybe through delusion, desperation or ignorance, but that doesn't make it right.

If the guy had said he was raising money to set up a fund to help young or aspiring filmmakers, he'd have had my attention and quite possibly a donation. But no, he wanted something for nothing and he wanted it for himself.

Furthermore, for your information, there is no slander in this thread - there can't be by definition - and I'm not hiding behind anything; you can look me up - I'm real and have never written anything online I wouldn't say to a person's face:)

Anyhow, I do agree with you, we should keep things civil on here. I think the guy did the right thing by abandoning his campaign and honestly I wish him the best with fulfilling his dream.

Kind regards and happy shooting,

Liam.
